As a 3-dig is it very likely to get leave on a school day if requested? Would getting a Friday off be difficult or even possible?

All you have to do is send up a "SSS"- Staff Summary Sheet. You basically put down your request, and then send it up your chain- element leader to flight leader to Squad Comm to AMT to finally AOC. If your AOC approves it, you can pretty much do whatever you want through a triple S. However, for things like missing school or whatever, it can get more difficult to get approval. Usually it has to be a very good reason to miss school.

unless a family member or relative dies, its VERY difficult to loose a school day. Think of it this way, its a military duty, how hard you think it is to get out of your job in the Air Force?

Getting off of school days, AFAIK, is not a SSS thing, it's an SCA thing. In that case, as long as it's a "once in a lifetime" event it's generally easy to get an SCA approved, so long as you're not trying to miss too much school based on the event.

there is a separate form you fill out, the SCA. it must receive approval from your AMTs, then your AOC before going to a wing SCA board who decides whether or not to approve it. my younger sister was confirmed this year (the day after Recognition), and i was her sponsor, so i was able to miss class the Monday to travel back to usafa

So would I be able to get leave for my sister's wedding? Because if I couldn't I think I would probably just come up missing for a few days. ha :)

what better place to get married than the cadet chapel? tell her to get married there, thad be sick. wait, is this the navy sister?

depends on how your standing is academics and conduct (which could be a problem for you ;)) and what all you would miss. But asking earlier is better. i was able to get a certain summer leave period so i can be in a wedding this summer

I wasn't planning on telling USAFA that the wedding is my traitor sister's who crossed over from my side to the dark depths of the Navy. :) ha. Would they pretty much let you go if you're not on any sort of probation, or does it totally depend on the timing and squad, etc.?

All of that plays into it. It depends on your AOC, what is going on here at the time you would leave, your current standing, etc etc.

Just so you inow, my son (class of 2010) was allowed to leave for his AUNT's wedding! This was shortly after acceptance day. Post-Basic, they seem to be ok with weddings (and funeral's too, BTW), provided you fill out the proper paperwork. A kindly 3-dig helped him do just that last year.

also into play is what classes you would miss, what in that class u'd miss (GRs, labs, etc = bad), and how easy it is for you to work with your teacher to make it up (missing class, even with SCA approval, still requires teacher approval)

It's really not as big of a deal as everyone in here is making it out to be. It's quite easy and requires very little time so long as you do thing properly.

I have hoped to be granted one days leave my 3-dig year for an ultramarathon but I don't know if that will be deemed worthy of missing school.

Thats a long time from now...

But I can't see a reason why they would dissaprove that, it seems like a pretty legitimate reason to me.

A LOT of people are approved (if not encouraged) to attend marathons, iron mans, etc. We've had 2 in the last month in my squad.

thanks hornetguy, that makes me feel a lot better. i thought i was pretty much going to have to stop racing.

I know for a fact that they have a Marathon Team here as well, cause I see them out on the trails all the time when I'm running with my team. I dunno if thats something you'd be interested in.

Patriot,
That is definately something i would be interested in.
Are there many trails at the Academy? And can you leave the base on training runs if you were to run far enough? Or does that count as "leave."?

The Academy has Marathon, Triathlon, and Iron man clubs. They can train a lot. Plus, USAFA is on 18,000 acres. I know of at least 3 different running trails that are beautiful to run on. You can pretty much run anywhere on base really. You would probably like it.
