I read somewhere that dorming is required for freshmen at Barnard. Is thsi true?

Are you local? Most freshman at Barnard live in the quad, but Barnard does also allow students to commute - so if you life in Manhattan, the Bronx, New Jersey, etc. - I don’t think you would be required to dorm. The financial aid policies strongly discourage off-campus living – if you are not in a dorm, then that will automatically result in at least $10K being taken out of your financial aid package, at least during the early years. (There’s a “senior option” for financial aid that allows seniors to live off campus, and at least one year when housing was tight they offered that to juniors as well – but basically if you are an incoming freshman with a low EFC, the money you don’t pay for on campus housing will be simply cut out of your grant. So it works if you are living at home with your parents, but not if you have to pay rent somewhere else).

Pretty much true. This is the best housing you are going to get in NYC for these prices. It’s really not too bad. Both daughters had well matched roommates, and truth be told probably wish that they had kept them.
