I’m not surprised at the “low level of intellectual difficulty.” It’s SUMMER reading. The kids have just finished high school and are in the mood to celebrate and kick back. Many of them know they will get slammed with work in September. Requiring some deep, difficult reading over the summer would probably be counter-productive - it won’t get them excited to have a discussion about it, and they might just blow it off altogether. But a book that’s an easy read but brings up contemporary issues and questions that affect society today - that’s going to get college kids motivated to read and discuss.

I’m a little sad to see “Due to budget constraints The PREFACE Shared Reading Program has been suspened for the 2010/2011 academic year” on the Cal Poly SLO website. I’m sure they meant “suspended” but thats a whole 'nother discussion thread.

The community was invited to read the book as well as the incoming freshmen. A kind of county-wide book club. Did it do much to break the ice? I don’t know. I miss being nudged to read something I wouldn’t otherwise even consider.
