For English 10:
1. The Death of Ivan Ilych
2. Farewell to Manzenar
3. The Girl With the Pearl Earing

How funny. At my school, regular English students (and those in dual enrollment) don't have summer homework, let alone reading three books during the summer.

"A Doll's House"? In my school that's actually one read during the year, and only by one sophomore class (mine).

Eh, I guess it helps if I spell it correctly. ;) None of the teachers really like, so they put it as summer reading and get it over with in the first couple of days of school.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
White Noise by Don DeLillo
The Color Purple by Alice Walker
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

proletariat, that list is amazing! here's a vote for the road-that book literally changed my life...amazing. however, jane eyre is really boring, and excruciatingly long. it's like a demented fairy tale

^^I don't really think I'd like Austen, but maybe I'll try it.

^I've heard many bad things about Jane Eyre, but I've also heard some complaints about The Road. I've already decided I'm not going to read Jane Eyre, and probably not The Color Purple. Right now, I'm thinking Brave New World, Pride and Prejudice, and White Noise, but that might change if I hear more good things about the road. In that case, I'll drop Pride and Prejudice. I love our AP English list, too.

Brave New World is really good. It's not a tough read and is actually interesting, really controversial, and brings up really interesting points.

vivelavieboheme... read my sister's keeper. i loved that book. did an independant project on it as a result junior year and recommended it to my teacher. it's a great read and it goes quick =]

proletariat2... i would recommend pride and prejudice, it's a fantastic novel and i really enjoyed it!

I didn't like Jane Eyre or Pride and Prejudice. Bronte and Austen are just...meh. So flowery. Brave New World is pretty good -- we read that one in-school, and I didn't hear any complaints.

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Brave New World. It's good if you're into dystopian, kind of futuristic things (not sci-fi, but if you want something very political, Brave New World is for you.)

I also enjoyed The Color Purple, but it takes a little while to read through Celie's misspellings and whatnot.

I guess I was one of the few ppl on this forum who liked Jane Eyre. I liked how it wasn't the typical love story. I thought Pride and Prejudice was boring and barely made it out alive.

I also highly suggest White Noise. Do not disregard this book. It is funny satire.
