Does anyone else think it's ridiculous for Residential Life to shut the dorms down so quickly after we return? Move in, stay 8 days, leave 8 days, come back. I understand the idea that they might want to save money, but considering those of us in Mountainview are paying roughly $1,000/month to live on campus, losing such a big chunk of the first month is a bit irritating, especially when you factor in gas/tolls/time/aggravation for those of us who live in NYC, Long Island, etc.

It’s only because Rosh Hashanna is the same week as Labor Day. It would have been three days off already and they decided it was easier just to shut down. The bright side is that if you forgot some stuff you don’t have to have it mailed up to Bing.

Also I was planning to have to go home anyway those two days (Yes, I’m Jewish) so the cost was already factored in for me. Now at least I get a full week out of it instead of just two days.

I am Jewish and yes, it is absurd…if Bing is really searching for OOS students this is not the way to get them to come; yea, cancel classes, but don’t close the dorms…ridiculous

I don’t get why Binghamton seems to be the only major SUNY school shutting down this way. As the parent of a freshman (at another SUNY), I’d hate for my son to have this disruption so soon after the start of his college experience.

It’s because Binghamton has a very large Jewish population. I’m not even sure if the other SUNYs give off for the Jewish holidays like Bing does…

Don’t complain. You’re lucky you even get a whole week off (make that 9 days) in September. When I was a student, we NEVER got a whole off in the Fall semester.

Trust me, some of you will want the break from all the weirdos (including your random roommate) that you will meet during your first week. Enjoy it while you can.

Have you noticed the spring semester 2011 schedule? A week off from March 19 to March 27, and then another week off in April from April 16 to April 25…How many spring breaks does a person need?

reader - One of them is probably for passover/easter, and then one is spring break?

The problem is Passover and Easter don’t coincide well this year… Hence two breaks.

I may be incorrect, but my understanding is that Passover 2011 is April 19-April 24, and Easter Sunday 2011 (for nonEastern churches) is April 25. I guess the concept is to have a break midway during the semester, and then to have a break to take in account religious holidays in April. In any event, it is two trips to and from home or elsewhere within a relatively short period of time, with the concomitant costs.

Wow, I hadn’t realized Easter was so late this year, Ash Wednesday isn’t even until March!

I was banking on Easter being the usual early April time, but now that I know its not, the double break thing makes little sense… Spring break is usually for these religious holidays, not just for a break… But whatever… Gives me more time to do assignments.

i applied for break house, i’m wondering if i could stay during the summer even though I might not take summer school.

i am pretty sure that your housing assignment is just for the academic year – fall and spring semesters – so break housing would not include the summer – you have to apply for summer housing separately, not all break housing is used for summer housing.

from the housing license form –

if you need to remain in the area over the summer, you could probably find a sublet from someone living off campus who isn’t staying in the area over the summer.

If you sign up for the apartment communities, if they use them as summer housing and if you take summer classes, you can probably stay there for most of the summer. You would need to figure out what to do during the gaps though…

Well, that was useless. A majority of my professors are reteaching their first week of class all over again, since everyone forgot everything anyway. Our next vacation is on Thanksgiving, with the exception of the canceling of classes after 1PM this Friday.

I really don’t understand:
a) who created this schedule
b) who approved the schedule created by person in a)
