Rescinded last minute because my high school isn’t “local”

I was initially accepted into cal state LA way back in March. Just yesterday I received a very vague email rescinding my admission. I went to admissions in the morning and they said I have the grades, I have the sat, but because I’m not a “local”student based on my high school that is the reason why my admission was revoke. Why are they using this criteria at the very last minute, with school starting in 3 weeks, to rescind me? I don’t think it’s a justifiable reason whatsoever ever.

I filed an appeal, but is there another avenue I can take to clear this matter?

Here is cal state LA’s list of preference high schools.

Is your high school in that list?

Could mean that you eligibility index was higher than that needed by local area applicants but below that needed by non local area applicants. Unfortunately, it does not look like CSULA publishes its past thresholds like SJSU does. Will they tell you what the thresholds were? If so, you can compare them with your eligibility index.

However, in this case, it looks like the whole situation was caused by their error in the first place.

In addition to following the normal appeal process, based on what you are saying in your post, I would write a letter to the Dean (looks like her name is Piya Bose) attaching your acceptance letter, the email, your transcripts, SAT scores, and describing how you are planning on starting to attend the school in THREE WEEKS! If possible, I would walk the letter in to the office personally, or at least send it express mail. I would consider doing the same for the Chair of whatever college you were accepted to and any other highly-positioned people you can identify in case they take an interest in your situation. If this is the only reason your admission was revoked, it seems absurd that they would be notifying you now. Be polite and factual in your letter and keep a record of any calls you have with school representatives.

Good luck!

Excellent advice from @pickledginger and for all the years that I have been involved and posting on CC, I have never heard of any student being rescinded for not being in the local service area. Do everything you can to fight this decision and please update when you are able.

Best of Luck.
