How easily available are research opportunities at notre dame for freshmen, and how strong is the biology department? is notre dame know for research?

For more details on undergraduate research opportunities, I’d see the website:[index

I don’t think you’ll have a lot of opportunity for advanced research as a freshman, since you won’t even be in your major department. You can’t get funding for your research without a faculty advisor. And I imagine a sophomore or junior would receive consideration first, given that they both have more experience in the subject and less time left at the university, as well as actually being enrolled in the major.

I don’t think you should just focus on freshman research, though. You’ll do more meaningful work the more knowledgeable you are in the subject, and, as a freshman, you probably won’t be as prepared as you will be later. As soon as you’re in the major, though, you can start proposing and forming research opportunities.

The biology department is good; some people in it are planning to go to grad school for bio, but it seems (to someone outside the department) that most bio majors are premed (ND is great for premed).

Notre Dame is not particularly known for research at the graduate level (ie, the PhD programs are not considered the top in the field), because it chooses to focus on undergraduate education. Thus, while graduate research isn’t the highest priority, undergraduates do have opportunity for original research.

This should answer a lot of your biology-specific research questions (remember to check the sub-categories on the side bar): Research // Department of Biological Sciences // University of Notre Dame](http://undergradresearch.nd.edu/)

In addition to normal research, you can take the honors track in the major. The honors track is more for people who will be pursuing a PhD in Biology. The information for biology honors is here: http://biology.nd.edu/assets/53725/honors_program.pdf

Wow, thank you so much for all of that info! I will definitely keep all of this in mind!
