Does anyone know how I could go about trying to get a research position as a transfer student? Is there a sort of general application type thing or is this something professors decide and ask specific students for in their own time? I'd really love to get involved in some research as soon as possible, but I'm worried that coming in as a transfer and not knowing any professors I'll be hard pressed to find one.

W&M has a lot of undergraduate research opportunities

Are professors generally responsive to students wanting to research, or do they always go for the “I don’t need anyone” approach?

There is no general application. Some departments have specific programs, but even those are often easier to get into if you are already working with a professor.

I only know about math, physics, and chemistry. In those departments, students usually contact professors directly and there is usually someone willing to work with you. You should do some research on the professor beforehand so you can have an informed conversation.
