Research, publications, and presentations-Sociology

I am planning to apply to sociology PhD programs. I did an internship with a national council that is comprised mainly of sociologists. I wrote a few briefing papers and fact sheets that got published on the website and sent out on a newswire. Some have my name and others don't. How should I put these in my applications? They are different from peer reviewed publications, but they were published and submitted by an academic-level council.
Also, what counts as research for sociology. I have spent the summer working for a family historian, doing research for her book. The research has been on women and families in the 1950s. Does this count as sociological research? Also, for a final project last year, I created a survey on surveymonkey and got 200 replies. I used this data in a presentation and paper. Does this count as research?
And finally, I want to present at the PSA and ASA conferences this year. I would love any input and advice! Any at all! Should I submit the presentation I did in class last year, or something new? What do they look for?
Thank you.

No one?
Should I post this question somewhere else?

Sorry to ignore you. Yes this is research. Furthermore, you might be able to utilize some of your connections from the professional society.
