Research Query

Hey guys,
I am applying to Caltech RD. I have a query and was wondering if anyone here could help me with that.

Well, I am conducting research under a professor at a university. Since it's still under progress, I will not be able to submit a research paper to Caltech. In that case, will an abstract suffice, illustrating the work I have been doing till date?

Moreover, since the deadlines are really close, will it count against me to do several research projects but not submit any research materials i.e. paper or abstract?

In any case, I will be submitting a letter of recommendation from my mentor.

Thanks!

I would recommend writing and submitting an abstract of your work so far.

I don’t think so. I think the letter of recommendation from your mentor will count the most.

My qualification for the following statements: I got in EA.

I was in an odd situation as well. While I helped conduct research in 2010 and 2011, the papers had yet to be published by the time I applied to caltech. I couldn’t submit an abstract/whatnot because (1) I wasn’t a coauthor and (2) the experimental procedure and results had to be kept hidden until publication as part of the center’s rules. All I could do was express my love for science in my essay and request a letter of recommendation from my research mentor, and you know what? It worked out fine for me. However, submitting an abstract should definitely help your chances. If we are at least somewhat similar in other stats and have great essays+short blurbs, I think you shouldn’t worry too much over the research part of your application.

My kid’s research mentor has been on travel for some time and has not submitted the recommendation letter so far.

How important/useful is a research mentor’s letter of recommendation?

I did research at my high school and wrote a paper for caltech. It wasn’t published, but I sent it to them anyway. Was that wrong?
