Research Science Institute 2007 Introductions

Does every room have it's own shower? Or is it a shared shower? Is it clean or does it smell funky?

hey guys - can permanent residents apply? im not a citizen - but i really want to do rsi next year and i think im qualified

Some rooms do have private showers, but many don't. One girl had a room that was likely for handicaps and her shower was huge. At most you will only have to share a room with 3 or 4 people.
I think most people had single rooms as well. Initially, I wanted a roommate so that I could get to know people, but that doesn't really matter. There are so many group activities, that you're only in your room to sleep (if that!).
Another note about Simmons, it is a really cool dorm, but its a bit of a walk from the main campus and has the slowest elevators in the world. The stairs are really odd too because they don't reach every floor. To go to certain floors, you have to down a floor before you can go up.
I wouldn't recommend bringing golf clubs because they are cumbersome and you likely won't have a chance to use them. There are many RSI planned excursions during the weekends that you can do with other rickoids.
I don't really think you need $500, but it's not that hard to spend $500 because there is a mall really close by (Spudman discovered the beauty of Express, and that maybe part of the reason he spent $500). You are fed really well because you get about $700 or so dollars to spend (and Dinner is free on most nights). The grocery store (LaVerdes) has candy, sushi, smoothie, pita chips, and all kinds of awesomeness). If you don't want to bring shampoo or the such, you can just buy them at LaVerdes.

Moonracer: I don't think they can apply unless you are a citizen of a country that sponsors RSI.

^thats sucks :(

For the record, the blisters developed on the way down, not up. Historical accuracy must be maintained.

Name (optional, the internet is a dangerous place): Let's call me, umm, "Harrison." Because that is my name.

State: GA

Fields of interest: Z/17Z, Q, Q[rt(2)], C, and any on which Frisbee is played.

Research experience: None.

Test scores: actually, the same as Winston's, minus the 5 on the AP Stat exam. If you don't want to go back to the first page, that'd be a 238 PSAT, 35 ACT, and 5 on Calc BC and World History APs. (Plus a 2360 SAT.)

Awards: Lots and lots of regional math tournaments, ARML teamx3, USAMOx2 (3 this year), State MC teamx2, and a partridge in a pear tree. (Plus I was school spelling bee winner twice?)

ECs: Academic bowl, math team, Model UN team (even though I'm terrible at it -- "Hi, India." "Hi, Greece. I like your movies." "I like yours. They're very...formulaic."), formerly chorus, currently school newspaper

Why you think you got in: 'Cause the redneck population's severely underrepresented at RSI? I don't know; my scores were decent, my essays were lacking in my view, my grades were almost certainly bottom 25% of applicants, I have no real research experience (just halfhearted stabs at random math problems on dark nights), and my recs were, I guess, really good. Maybe it's because I somehow managed to name about 10 MIT professors in my essays without realizing it. That's probably it.

Academic and non-academic interests: Math and computer science; math, economics, and computer science; math and spam; math, compsci, and spam; math, compsci, econ, and spam; spam, compsci, econ, and spam; spam, math, spam, spam, compsci, and spam; spam, spam, spam, math, and spam; spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, politics, spam, spam, spam, and spam; and Lobster thermidor aux crevettes with a Mornay sauce garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top, and spam.

Other info (funny joke/political affiliation/goals in life, etc.): Is it bad that I've also, as a matter of fact, considered starting a barbershop quartet that sings about quantum physics? Or just some cosmic signal that RSI is perfect in every way?

Has anyone seen "Fermat's Last Tango"?

Oh, for the 700 dollars spending money we get...is it in some sort of gift card form? Or will we be able to use it anywhere?

I heard you can only use the money they give at certain places on campus, like to buy groceries and appliances. :'(

Oh darn, groceries? I guess I'll have to learn to cook. No restaurants?

Nah, people do go out to eat .. how often they decide to probably ranges quite a bit. There are lots of places to go eat in Boston. But I think the $$ to pay for restaurant food would come from our own pockets (unless RSI has an agreement with ALL restaurants in Boston to accept our credit, lol) Why would you need to learn how to cook? Nobody is telling you to buy raw meat or vegetables and sautee them :) I wonder about how the money works for lunch, since we'll be at our mentorships and some won't come back to Simmons for lunch. Maybe we'll be able to eat at Harvard/BU/BC/hospital cafeterias for free.

Has anyone heard from future mentors yet?

I didn't think we heard from mentors until the beginning of the summer if at all. They asked us to fill out some more info on research interests. Or wait....was that just me?

Hey, who's going to ISEF?

Not me!

Yeah, I got the letter, too. I want to attach a research paper that I'm currently writing, so it'll be awhile before I actually send all the forms back.

I'm going to ISEF - I have to take E&M there as well, as my own school doesn't offer it.

Does sending forms early speed up mentor selection/help us get better mentors?

Dei Gratia,
Are you trying to continue research you've been doing on your own at RSI or starting a new project?

One of the forms won't download from the e-mail they sent me. Also, none of the electronic forms really have anything to do with research interests... Are they sending us anything else via post (hopefully soon)?

Would it be a bad idea to bring a bicycle to get around?

I imagine it would be a pain to bring a bicycle via plane.

Is there a place to buy good playing cards in case the decks we bring wear out?

I'm driving to Boston - Connecticut is close. Also, Costco has packs of playing card decks.
