Research Science Institute 2007 Introductions

wtrbear (tardigrades??) if you tell me which of the docs won't open for you, i can send you mine. i don't think we'll get anything else except for a student handbook by snail mail.

haha you guys are such typical dorks worrying about replacing card decks! i guess you're anticipating some hardcore euchre playing. i bet you can buy card decks all over campus though.

Damn right. It's because we're pro. Wait, there are 3 other people who play euchre right?

i don't think that you will wear out the cards, but they may get lost as no one (and sometimes their things) don't stay in the same room generally. hehe.
the $700 that you get is in the form of "tech-cash." it can only be used in MIT restaurants. You won't have to cook, because there are plenty of eatries avaliable (indian, japanese, chinese, american, etc.).
You can buy cards at LaVerdes, the grocery store. you can also buy crunk juice, staplers, mangos, and fruit at laverdes. its a staple of life for rickoids.
don't worry, you will all figure out everything when you get there :D!

hmmm, zach asked the same thing last year about bringing a bike, and he never did. i guess it's convenient if you have to work across campus and want to get there quickly, but otherwise, you'll probably want to be walking with your friends when you see them around.

and the stuff i bought at express was totally clearance and cheap!! it was actually the mit shirts at w-20 that cost me more. I believe I bought 3 t-shirts and a sweat shirt, plus my RSI shirt. I did go out to eat a lot too. mmmmmm, bertucci's.

If you have an off-campus mentorship, you will be provided with hard cash for transportation and food. Thus, you will end up with a lot more money on your card than those who were on campus. (i found that very useful when my card ran out soon, but omar still had about 500 left on his).

If you really want, you can cook. We had lots of people who tried baking stuff in the Simmons kitchens just for fun (and also succeeded in making a big mess).

sigh i just hung out with a couple rickoids last night. how i miss it.

fermat, i love the monty python references. :-)

What is express? Where can we buy a fan?

I look forward to finding out what crunk juice is.

Guys, if we pool our tech cash, maybe we can buy an airconditioner.

The very idea of not building it ourselves offends me!

:P

Fine, the engineering people can build the air conditioner. The math people will try not to break it.

The incredible tardigrade! I'm really impressed that someone picked up on that...

what entails "good" playing cards anyways?

**Name /B: 'tis rather a scary place... in any case, i'm fern

State: vctoria, australia! (i think i might just be the first of the internationals here.)

Fields of interest: i put neuroscience and virology on my application, but i'm interested in so many different things it was a struggle to pick two.

Research experience: none would be pretty close there, ive done a few summer things, but nothing at all like this!

Test scores: we have a hugely different system. instead of having maths or science scores, we split it into bio, physics, chem, and a few levels of maths.

Awards: a few subject awards thru school, done a few maths and science comps but never won anything.

ECs: and this is?...

Why you think you got in: really, no idea. going to the National Youth Science forum was certainly a crucial step. but hey, im not complaining! what's the essay that you had to write?

Academic and non-academic interests: shooting, horse riding, skiing, reading, fiddling with linux - unfortunately rsi isn't during our hols though, so i'm snowed under with school work... curse yr 12!

**Other info /B: goals in life... that sounds like what my careers advisor wants me to choose!

and i'll add another question: how long will it take you to get from home to rsi?

oh goody! an australian! last year, we had a representative from australia tour the lab i worked in as they were discussing extending RSI to australia. and voila! we have an australian. i remember how they were discussing the difficulties of the australians coming here because of the hemispheric, and thus seasonal, differences. You're actually going to miss 6 weeks of school for this? wow.

EC's is extracurriculars. but you got those covered in your non-academic interests section.

count on at least a 20 hour or longer trip. we had some singaporeans and a korean last year. i don't remember how long it took them.

saidu10: express is a prep clothes store. there was one in the prudential center (an upscale shopping center in Boston) and it was specifically for men. they had big clearance signs, and i though "oooo, cheap, formerly expensive clothes!! yes!!" and i bought some.

there is also a mall in cambridge that they will take you too on the first day so you can buy fans if you need them. i found that if you're on the 10th floor of simmons, facing the river, you won't need one, but if you're on the 5th floor, facing the other direction, you'll need one. so, try and figure it out from there.

yeh, that represtative would have been geoff burchfield. he's the director of the science forum in aus that chose myself and the other aussie coming, davidson.

how hot does it acutally get in boston in summer?

Summer weather in New England is usually eighties to nineties F, and rather humid.

Wow, someone is missing 6 weeks of school for RSI? So how are you aussies going to catch up on that much work?

So, I didn't get RSI, but I still figured posting here was better than dredging up the long dead other thread

anyway .. don't know if you guys remember me, but if anyone cares to know: I got into the VA Governor's school program in engineering (12 people in the state) at NASA Langley.. so, though I still would have preferred RSI as its a) bigger (more community), b) a bit longer and c) at MIT (which I visited earlier this week and love as much as I thought I was going to!! (though every time I saw an Athena terminal I was kinda like sniff if I was going to RSI, I'd get an Athena account in a couple months)), I should still get some good research experience in and have a educational, interesting, and fun time.

Oh well, I'm (facetiously) of the opinion that none of you really exist anyway. You are all, in fact, CEE plants .. cause when I was at MIT, every student I talked to at length had applied for RSI, and every one had gotten rejected.. so I came to the conclusion that logically, no one must be accepted and that therefore RSI doesn't really exist :-P

Anyway, congrats again to everyone, I still envy you (and also, I envy everyone who is up at MIT CPW right now, but thats irrelevant); Talk to you later and have a great summer!

~Donald

catching up on work by trying to get ahead now... we're at the end of 2 weeks holidays, and i've spent most of that trying to get ahead. haven't really succeded all that well really. oh well.

and who wouldn't miss school for rsi?!

donald - that program at nasa sounds like heaps of fun :)

Good playing cards are cards that do not have irregular shapes to look cute. They are not made of plastic and liable to crack when you shuffle them. They have a nice texture to prevent stickiness. They snap nicely, and you can feel the freshness. Basically, I'm looking for non-souvenir-shopesque cards.

I'll probably end up bringing a bunch.

Costco sells packs of packs of pretty decent cards, I hear. For what it's worth.
