Research Science Institute ( RSI ) 2008

This is kind of a silly question- when the app says "three typewritten pages," can I assume they mean single-spaced? It seems impossible to fit it all otherwise (without serious editing, at least, lol), but I don't want to send in twice as much writing as they're looking for.

Thanks, in advance.

thestralnerd: They don't specify exact format, so do what you think is best. As long as it's clear, readable and well-organized, the details (font size, margins, spacing, etc.) don't matter.

Yep, single-spaced is right.

Would you recommend applying to both RSI and MITES?

hey everyone,

just wanted to see how i stand in the admissions process.

PSAT: 211 (math:76)
AP Calc BC: 5
AP Bio: 5
Im taking ap eng, stats, chem, comp sci, and physics C this year
I'll finish 3rd year university math by June.
I do math research at my local institute.

anyone know my chances?
Thanks

Though I am new to the board, I went to RSI this past summer. Here are a few recommendations I have for all that are applying.

I'm sure it has been said before (and admittedly I did not read all 26 pages of this stuff), but test scores really are a small part to ANY of the applications. The head honcho at RSI made it clear that many people with perfect SAT or ACT scores were not accepted.

I had a 213 PSAT and a 35 ACT when I applied.

What I like to think they are looking for is your passion for science. Do you participate in the olympiads? Do you pursue research outside of school? These are questions you should answer affirmatively. You should make it clear on your application that you have and will pursue what you want, regardless of whether you will get in.

Coming from a state that has one of the worst education systems in the country, I changed schools primarily because I could conduct research in an actual lab. I took 5 AP tests when my school only offered one "AP" course.

And don't flip out on the small stuff. I wrote two pages instead of three, because my writing was pretty concise. I submitted two recommendations, not ten.

RSI 07!

Please feel free to private message me (as I receive it as an email), but I may not come back to check the forums for some time. However, please don't ask me to evaluate your chances of getting in (because I really don't know), or for me to send you my application.

Good luck.

It may help, but it's not absolutely necessary to do olympiads or research to be accepted into RSI. My son didn't do either, but took AP Comp Sci in 9th grade followed by college level CS the summer after 10th grade. This, together with a passion for computers, is what got him in.

Apply if you're interested...you may have a chance and you won't know unless you try.

I'm applying...221 PSAT, 80 math, taking AP Bio and AP Latin (which doesn't really help) right now. My school (private) has block scheduling, and we can't take APs until junior year unless you are a year ahead in a language. We have 4 bells a day, and the lack of the amount of APs that we can physically take seems to take away from the "prestige" of our transcripts and applications. Next year I am taking AP Calculus, AP Physics, and AP Gov (irrelevant). I haven't taken my SATs, ACT, or AP tests yet, which may hurt.

My school is so grade oriented, and I don't think that I will get in because where I live there aren't these great opportunities nor the resources to enter these nationwide competitions...my school is so focused on college that the don't offer these things. A few years ago I did win numerous awards for my water research in Ohio.

Anyways, it doesn't hurt to apply, so I am just going to go for it =) The only way to have a 0% chance is to not apply.

Eileen - we have block scheduling as well, and I have taken no AP tests so far (I will probably take 3-5 this year, depending on if I want to self study).

I've done some research, but otherwise...I have nothing lol. But you never know, we both may get lucky :)

Stats:

PSAT- 227 Math= 80
SAT II Math II 800
SAT II Chem 780 (don't quite remember)

GPA= 4.0 on a 4.0 scale, never had below a 96 average in high school.
Rank 1 out of 50.

Classes-
Freshman- Honors Algebra II, Honors English, Spanish II Honors, Physical Science, Honors Government (No APs allowed freshman year at school, private school)
Sophomore- Honors Precalculus, Honors English, Spanish III Honors, Honors Physics, Honors Chemistry, AP World History (1 AP cap)
Junior (current)- AP Calculus, APUSH, AP Biology, Honors English, Spanish IV Honors (3 AP cap)

*=received award for highest average in subject for the year.

ECs-
Math Team, Quiz Bowl, Economics Club, Brain Game Team (local TV quiz show for high schoolers), Spanish Club, Key Club, Math Tutor, Mock Trial, Varsity Tennis Team, Hindu Youth Group, Honor Society, Honor Council, Boy Scouts- Received Eagle Last Year

Volunteer Work-
Too much to name from Scouts, Youth Group Work (Habitat for Hum., Salvation Army, etc.), Key Club stuff, Independent stuff at the local Health Dept Pharmacy.

Past Summer Programs-
Served as volunteer staff instructor at National Youth Leadership Training for the BSA, HOBY, Summer Ventures in Math and Science (this I think will be my strongest point, I wrote a research paper about data encryption and I received statewide recognition, letting me present at a Math Teachers' Conference), BSA Summer Camp

Edit: forgot to add, Freshman year, I got up to (School -> Regional -> State) State Science Fair and received Honorable Mention there.

Edit Again: Programming Experience- TIBasic, Python, C++ (minimal)

Yes I realize that RSI is ridiculously, ridiculously, ridiculously hard to get into. Yes I know that acceptance rates are incredibly small. My only hope is that my region would be somewhat underrepresented. I know that I can snag 2 great recommendation letters as well.

OK, so my stats may not be as stellar as some of the ones I've seen on CC but is it enough to give me even the slightest chance at RSI? I attend a small private school in NC that doesn't offer many APs but I take all the ones that are offered. No one else in my class is applying. I was just wondering if I should even bother finishing the application. Thnx for the feedback!

So, if you're just a random applicant who's interested in research and has good PSATs and high grades in hard classes, but no research experience, is RSI a complete pipe dream?

That's basically what I was, and I got in. Let me reiterate, no one's really sure what a winning formula to RSI is. As long as you've been close to the best you can be in your educational environment, you have a shot.

does anyone know if canadians can apply? thanks

Great to see so many students pop up here for RSI!!!
I miss it so so so much. MIT is great.
I am a rickoid as an international. (Come from Shanghai, P.R. China)

Super... But I have a friend at RSI got SAT1 2400, SAT2 Bio,Phy, Math1&2, Chem, all 800... Haha.. I am a rickoid, too. But as an international from Shanghai, China. Whatever, you have a great chance to get into, in my opinion, personally, basically.

Good Luck!!

Let's see....NC....

Probably 16% :)

@ Felis: "reliable algorithm" is right. haha that made my day.

at rsi hopefuls who are looking for research oriented summer programs, i wish you the best of luck. dont get too discouraged if you dont get accepted. it def doesn't mean that you aren't good enough.. like many prestigious programs there are more qualified applicants than spots.

i strongly suggest that if you are truly interested in a summer research program, you do some googling and take some time to apply to other similar although maybe less competitive programs. you might even think about contacting professors at a local university to see if you can get involved in their lab.

I will proudly say that i am an RSI reject, but I am quite thankful that I am. At the time i was pretty discouraged/thought i wouldnt go to college or something ridiculous. In retrospect that was kind of silly. A few months after my reject from RSI, I ended up getting accepted to the Clark Scholars Program (application @ Texas Tech University :: Clark Scholars Program) which is essentially RSI but scaled down to 12 ppl at texas tech. there is also some $$ involved which is cool. i also met some of the most brilliant ppl there (many of whom were also rejected from RSI). so dont get discouraged and keep your options open!

I'll merge any RSI chances thread into the general one-stop-shopping RSI thread for this year.

It'll be epic. Just like RSI's 2008 Intel STS results.

Does anyone know how many 2007 Rickoids were just announced as Intel STS semi-finalists?
