Yep, Europe, but it's my mom's screen name. Did you go through DoDEA or straight through RSI to apply? I guess you are Korea, with the forgotten peninsula.

I went through DoDEA, since they're apparently willing to pay for travel if you survive their screening.... also, I found out about this about a week ago, and there wasn't time to send it by mail to CEE. On the other hand, DoDEA likes faxed applications, so... yeah. I'm going to assume you also went through DoDEA? You're supposed to, if you go to a DoDDS school.

And yeah, I'm Korea. :P Feels weird identifying myself as an entire country.

I didn't know they'd pay for travel. I wonder how many other DoDDS students applied . No one else at my school had high enough PSATs to apply. It was so last minute- not sure how many people even know about it. We don't have science fairs at my school, so I don't have much in science, but I was really hoping for math anyway. But I understand you just get what you get, depending on who is around to mentor you. Where do you want to go to college?

MIT or Stanford...or maybe even CalTech, if I get desperate. :P

I don't know of any other DoDDS students who applied, and I hear there aren't all that many, at least in the Pacific. We didn't really find out until late... Apparently my Area POC is pressed to submit his choices of applicants soon, but there aren't many applicants for him to choose from.

Haha, you're math. I'm so Bio. :P

hey, do you guys know if gender makes any impact?

Although the app asks for M/F, I don't think they consider it. I believe they consider geographic location (state) to a limited extent, but don't consider race--high proportion of Asian ethnicity. This program is as close to pure merit-based as anything I've seen.

Here's the list of 2007 attendees:
http://www.cee.org/news/2007pdf/RSI_Media_Advisory.pdf

So there's a correlation (if not a causal effect) between being Asian and getting accepted?

Do I get bonus points for being half-Asian? :D

I would really like to see a rickoid who has something definitive to say about the geographical bias or lack thereof. Whoever gets in this year, somebody please ask and let us know. Geographic bias rumors are rampant and I'd really like to hear...

What do you mean by geographic bias? Like, what kind?

That's very interesting. i'd like to know as well.

Geographic bias rumors:
1) explicit quotas by region
2) explicit quotas by state
3) implicit of 1) or 2)
4) no regard for which state you're from

I can only tell you what I know. For 4 of the last 5 years, our state has had one Rickoid. To my knowledge there was 1 other from our state in the late 80's. This is a state in the Midwest.

I would also like to know about the state quotas.

Have any of you applied to other summer programs? If so, which ones?

The anticipation!! March 31st seems like a long time away.

i agree, potential!
what are we going to do until the 31st?
anyone taking the sat in march? i know i am. what fun!

yayverily's link shows there doesn't seem to be any geo bias. TX had 4 last year. lots of Asian names too

Does anyone know if CEE sends rejection letters? Or do we just assume if we haven't heard anything by March 31 that we didn't get in?

They send rejection letters.

Hm, did anyone here actually include that self-addressed postcard?

I did. I haven't gotten it back yet, but I know they got my app - one of the CEE people signed for it (overnighted)

Ditto here.

And RhineandRoses, I assume the bias they are talking about refers to quotas per state/regions. So for example, in the case on Maryland, where there were 3 Rickoids last year, we're wondering if it'll be 3 again this year. Or in NJ and Maryland combined, where there were 5 last year, we're wondering if it'll be 5 again this year... or something like that.

omg blair pplzz from maryland! danggg! they so freaking smart! sigh*... so much for wootton... well... results aren't out yet, so we shall see... lol

let's just breathe, y'all. we have over a month and a half left.
