hey, have a handful of competitive and very intelligent kids and you'd be surprised at what happens. i feel bad for speculating about someone so helpful; who cares who they are -- they're helping. dont bite the hand that feeds.

actually, i'm pretty sure you can't do siemens unless you're a senior (or do a team project), but yeah, i think intel isef would play a role. except a lot of crazy applicants apply, like the kid next to me who won first place grand award in the world in my category applied to rsi this year, uuugghhhh

Yeah so basically I'm lowering my expectations, so my dreams wouldn't be so devastingly crushed later this week when I get the letter. I keep telling myself that my chances are very very slim, but still.. I'm so anxious.

:nuzzles the hand: Thank you, privatecitizen, whoever you are. I do think this whole... ... court case is getting out of hand though. It was funny at the begginning, but now it's just becoming tiresome. Whether privatecitizen is involved or not, there's nothing we can change about it, and we ought to thank him/her for the help he/she has been.

And... with all this speculation, I feel myself wasting time on this thread. I think I'm going to pledge not to post on this thread at all until someone posts about decisions arriving. Then I'll congradulate and spend the rest of the week freaking out. :)

honestly, i want to stay away from this thread but i can't help it. besides, i'm on spring break and i'm at home studying for ap's.... so it's hard!

the wait is driving me crazy.

wow. i'm so jealous of people with minds like that.

also, he's cute. now i want to get into rsi even more, if only to meet him..

I'm pretty sure Dayan LI was a senior, but one of the three top ISEf winners last year was a sophomore and he dominated the awards. Philip Vidal Streich - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yeah Dayan Li was a senior

Is this the list of people get in 2008 RSI ?

Are the people who have partcipated/achieved in any major science awards/competitions at a much greater advantage as opposed to those who did not?

only the hopefulls so far hll :)

it depends. i think if you, like Philip Streich, won tens of thousands of dollars in awards, then yes. if it was more like local science fair stuff/regional awards, then probably not-- or maybe a small boost.

keeping in mind that most people haven't had the opportunities to conduct real research though, i'm sure that not having entered research competitions won't be too much of a drawback. if my understanding is correct, many rickoids have never done any research at all.

that is very nice to hear, for the high school I attend is more conservatory like than anything, and I doubt science is at the top of its list.

My sister went to RSI 2003, she didn't have any research experience, a 760 SAT math & verbal, no significant awards that I can remember (perhaps a high distinction in the New South Wales english test), wasn't head of any clubs (our school didn't HAVE clubs at the time) and nothing too special about her app, except she writes well so I assume her essays were good. But the point is she did well there; was given a difficult research topic and completed it with ease. And now she's at MIT with a perfect 5.0. Catch: She was an Indian citizen, which might have made things less competitive.

Anyway, the point is the judges at RSI apparently know that a lot of talent goes unrecognized; lack of major awards or research experience does not equal being incompetent.

Blah- okay breaking my vow and posting ONCE here.

There have been two attendees from my school in the past 5 years. Both were not Philip Vidal Streichs... but both had similar stats: research at nearby lab (but no awards when they applied), strong extracurriculars, plethora of ap courses/tests, aime, and usabo semifinalist (my school doesn't sponsor it anymore!! :()

Funny thing- one of the teachers who I asked to write my recommendation told me about them and how they attended the program and whatnot... :)

Okay- now... not posting until decisions come out.

classof09, you sure you're not going to post again? :P

i think in terms of stats i am really strong (I'm not going to be one of those humble people who post a bunch of stats and pretend to be modest). What I'm scared of is being one of the 150 who were qualified enough but didn't make the cut.
