Research Science Institute (RSI) 2009

@ ^ lmao. 10 char

So what can I put for #5,6? It asks about my technical skills and computer programming skills. the only computer stuff I know about is Mathematica which I was introduced to in another summer program I did before. And how are technical skills different? What do they mean? Thanks!

Well, we could incite discussion and thus popularity by bringing up eugenics again...

xDD

RSI kids are disappointing, at least most of the ones I've met here are. Should explain why less people are wowed by the prospect of "ZOMG RSI!111"

why would u say that?

I can't agree with that, I'm sorry.

^of course you can't, or rather, you refuse to because you're an RSI hopeful who wants the reassurance that getting accepted will legitimize you as a smart person. Don't let it define you. I know several kids from RSI '07 and RSI '08 (~30) and I'd say about 10 of them are legit, the rest are bums.

computergeek, don't disagree with shalashaska for no reason. what proof do you have against him. don't go by their project title, or necessarily even success in research competitions...since success in those doesn't always go to the ones who are the smartest, many times those who are well connected.

why so hostile everybody?

It's just a summer program...

This is just a thread of eager HIGH SCHOOL students, you can't expect all of us to be completely self-actualized people. If some kids are trying to get into RSI to prove something to themselves, so be it; however, they still have a place in this thread because they are interested in RSI.

I do , however, agree that maybe we (including myself) put too much emphasis on brand names like RSI, but like I said, we are just high school kids. it's not that big of a deal.

simmuh down....

And in response to the question about technical skills (as answering questions should be what this thread is about): I'm not quite sure what the difference between technical/computer skills is. At any rate, I think any experience with computer programming/modeling would fit into this category. In terms of experience, just be honest; tell them that you have some experience with mathematica. That's more experience than most of the applicants will have.

^Alright thanks! But also..just wondering, but since most applicants are juniors..they wouldn't have taken many AP's right? I took 3 sophomore year, and am thinking that is number is low, but what is the average for RSI applicants? Also, if I am going to do a research project second semester (after applications are due) should I mention it? Thanks again!

woah woah. Hold on a second guys. I didn't attack you or anything, so chill. I'm just saying that I don't agree with that because, yes I am obviously one who hopes to get in, but also because I think that it just has good precedence. Just looking at Siemens competition and ITS winners kinda makes you think about it in a positive way don't you think?

Cheers.

My school only allowed us one AP sophomore year. Although I don't think that is characteristic of the "average" applicant, I know that there has been more than one Rickoid with only one AP sophomore year.

My youngest daughter, a high school junior, just received a postcard from RSI in the mail today. Does this mean anything (maybe she did well on the PSAT)?? How might they have gotten her name?

The PSAT is used for recruiting for RSI, among other sources of email lists.

I'm getting worried..anyone from California receive any mail or anything? I haven't received anything at all...nor do I have PSAT scores.

Anyone from FL get anything?

When do we get PSAt scores btw?

^Last year I didn't get my PSAT scores until January...

hey tomjonesetc. i'm in cal too and haven't gotten mail or PSAT results yet. i was getting nervous too... i was thinking to myself "holy #&@! did i get so low of a score community colleges aren't even sending me mail?!!?"

It's only a matter of time i guess.

Um, if it helps, I live in Texas and I just got a postcard in the mail yesterday. But, it probably takes them some time to go through a bunch of names and stuff. Also, did you check the box on the PSAT that gives collegeboard authority to give your name, address, email, etc. to colleges?

Also, I have no experience with computer programming. Basically, I can do whatever i want with Microsoft, but other than that, I'm pretty useless. I learn quickly though, so it won't take me to long to pick up a computer language or two. Would you recommend getting a book and teaching myself?

Also, the school I go to splits up grades. So, 9 adn 10 are on one campus while 11 and 12 are on another. The split prevents a lot of the nineth adn tenth graders from taking AP/IB courses. So, I only have one. However, I'm taking the most courses I can right now. Are there other students with this problem? And if so, is there anythign we can do now to offset this?

Thanks so much for your help.

I also have this problem of very little programming experience.
Is computer science skills a major factor in getting into RSI?

Also, which standardized test scores should we verify?
How should you verify them? Is xeroxing the sheet that collegeboard mails good enough?

@rt2000 I don't think AP tests will do any/very little negative effects if your essays are strong.
