I've seen some suggestions as to improve your chances and a few of them are usually, "do some research"

my question is, how do you just "Do Research"? I'm assuming this is not like your everyday high school research project. This is where you actually try to find something new instead of just pulling data from other peoples work and organizing it into a powerpoint.

Where can I find something to research and a place to do it?

I think you have to try to contact a local professor at a college. Wait for other responses though because I’ve never conducted any research with a professor.

Yeah, contact a professor at a university or a scientist at some kind of research institute. Look for an established program for high schools students, but if there isn’t one you could randomly send emails.

To be honest, I don’t think there’s really a legitimate chance for high school students to really do research without getting very lucky or being absolute tippy-top students. And it usually requires both. Who ever suggested research might as well have suggested you win a Nobel Prize, or start a corporation.
