Are incoming freshmen given their assigned residency campus before orientation? My son is scheduled to attend the June 23rd session and he would like to know beforehand if hell be stationed at Upper or Newton campus. He wouldnt want to register for early classes if he going to be residing at Newton.

I don’t think incoming freshman are given their final freshman housing assignment until after their orientation - or at least that’s how I remember it.
My daughter is currently a junior at BC, she went to one of the first freshman orientation sessions, she was housed in “90” on lower campus for orientation and she didn’t know at that time where she would be living her freshman year.
Congratulations to your son, I hope he likes BC. I know the whole Newton Campus vs. Upper Campus causes much anxiety for freshman but it seems that everyone adjusts quickly and ends up liking where they live.

Dear Rastaman : Rooming assignments are not distributed until August. As for making course selections based exclusively on times, your son will have some very limited flexibility on that front. The first and foremost issue should be getting into courses which are genuinely interesting in the freshman year. The timing of those courses will be a secondary concern.

I’ll verify that housing assignments are distributed in August.

My recommendation is to attend an earlier orientation session. They say there isn’t an advantage to registering for classes in the early sessions versus the later sessions, but from my daughter’s experience (she went to the last session - we’re from California) is that, while there may be spots still available in the classes she wanted, the more favorable days and times were slim pickings - e.g. labs (the only Chem lab left by the time she registered in August was Friday evening from 6-8 PM). Also, if you go to the final orientation session, you will not be housed on the Lower Campus together with the other freshmen - you will move directly into your dorm. In my daughter’s case, housed at Newton, she was the only girl on her entire floor (not even an RA) for 3 nights. It was NOT good!

Definitely attend the earlier orientation, you get preference for course selection. My friends who went to the later orientations were locked out of some courses that were more popular among freshman. He can always change his classes during add/drop period, unless there are no other sections available, which can happen.
