Which Residence hall do you like the most and why? Maseeh and McCormick look very appealing for me. :)>-
Wasn’t there a building that burned down fairly recently with a BBQ on top? That placed seem cool… you know, before it burned down.
@ObitoSigma Bexley was demolished recently, last year if I remember. Don’t think any dorms have burned down.
@Mrduque what gender are you? McCormick is a women’s dorm.
Baker House.
There was a Fire at Random Hall, but as far as I know it is move-in ready now.
@MITer94 I know haha, I’m just saying that I like it’s architecture and furnishing
All the residence halls are cool. Personally, with the exception of McCormick, MacGregor, East, and Random, I would love to move into any of them. The quads in Baker House are lit. Simmons and Maseeh are really attractive to me too! From what I hear, Maseeh also have quads.
@ObitoSigma I don’t remember if Maseeh has quads (I lived in New), but I know Baker does. Whether dorms have triples or quads sometimes depends on demand – for example, New House has had forced triples in the past even though the housing website doesn’t say that there are triples.
I personally wasn’t too big into having many roommates, and I didn’t want a meal plan going in, so those are things you may want to consider when selecting dorms.
@ObitoSigma Lol, what do you mean “all the residence halls are cool” if you’d prefer not to move into like half of them XD?
@MITer94 The person who said Maseeh offers quads linked me to the rate chart. Not sure if the rate chart is an accurate reflection of whether Maseeh has “unforced” quads. https://housing.mit.edu/undergraduate/rate_chart
It might just be because Maseeh is the most popular residence hall, so they put the quads option because it’s so common to have to squeeze so many undergraduates in just one residence hall!
Maseeh has quads this year. Burton Conner has forced triples.
S lives in Senior House, but they are not allowing any incoming freshmen this year. Administration is set on destroying the culture of the place. Most residents feel administration used a confidential survey to punish the dorm.
Random did have a roof fire in July, but dorm is reopening for fall semester.
New House may be closing at the end of the year, they are “studying” it now.
You should consider whether you want a dorm with a cafeteria. If you are in one of them, you are required to buy a meal plan.
if you get in do you get to choose which hall you go into?
@fmasroor yes, you get some degree of choice. Freshmen enter a housing lottery in which you list the dorms/living groups in order, who you’d like to room with, etc., and Housing places you in a dorm.
A lot of freshmen realize they want to switch dorms after REX, so there is a second housing lottery if you wish to change dorms or possibly get your first pick (this is optional). After that dorms usually have some sort of in-house rush where students get put into living groups within dorms.
i live in bexley because i am a spooky ghost
Belly seemed to have the best location and my kid would have loved it. He’s in Senior House which is a good fit except for the freshman being punished. Also Senior House has 30 or so empty rooms while other dorms are being tripled and quadupuled.
Different people have different needs and personalities, so there is no “one dorm fits all” answer.
Based on my personal experience, I can say that I spent my first 3 semesters at MacGregor and found myself regretting it. Don’t get me wrong, I liked having a single with a big window and a great view of the Charles River. But, due to how the dorm is divided into several “Entries”, I found that unless your Entry-mates are very social, living at MacGregor felt rather isolating to me.
That is why I found myself liking Next House. I found that there was just so much more opportunity for socialization there because there was more people traffic passing by your dorm room. The physical divisions between Entries at MacGregor greatly limited that type of traffic, hence limiting random social encounters.
But that is just me.
