Residency Application

Has anyone successfully established Washington residency if you were from an out-of-state high school? I’m from California and hoping I can acquire residency by fall of my sophomore year. Does anyone have any tips or can clear up any facts? Thank you!!

I’m thinking of going to school part time and working off campus until the 12 month requirement is up BTW

Hi…how did this turn out? Were you successful? Any tips?

I got my residency the beginning of winter quarter. I came down to Seattle summer of '15, got a part time job off campus around august and was going to school part time as well, as I was going for the independently bona fide domicile. I would say don’t go on any vacations out of state during breaks or the summer, unless you can hide the fact that you did in your paystubs and credit/debit card statements. Just use cash when you go out of state so it doesn’t leave a trail on your statements. Get your driver’s license and voter’s registration converted when you come down within I think it was 30 days. The UW gives a list of what you need to do to establish bona fide domicile. Keep all of your paystubs, apartment leases, utility bills, credit/debit card statements, basically anything that says you’ve been physically present in Washington. Also, don’t have your parents claim you as a dependent on their tax returns and file your own independently. I applied for residency fall of '16 around November I think but they wanted more proof that I would be able to financially support myself in '17 and that I’d be working/physically present here so I had to wait to submit my December paystubs and had my employer write a letter saying I would be working with them in '17 for x hours. After that, I was waiting to see if I got my residency and the day of the deadline to change classes without fees I found out I was qualified for in state residency! Was a huge stress relief lol definitely talk to the residency office for help and when you submit your application later to keep up on it’s status
