Residential Assistant but 1098T is blank?

Hi! In 2016 I was full time student and had no income. I am a dependent of my parents and they pay for everything. In 2016 I was a Residential Assistant and the apartment complex paid for my room. When I was going to go give my 1098T to my parents accountant, I noticed that the only thing on there was tuition. Others have stated that theirs have a scholarship box and the amount that the apartment complex pays is in there in the form of a scholarship. Also, I did not receive a stipend or anything, just the room. Should I be contacting someone to fix it or just leave it the way it is ?

According to the IRS, https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1098et.pdf, a 1098T is issued for

A 1098T is NOT issued for

So it sounds like yours is correct.

Thanks! I was just confused because when I was asking around and looking it up, people were having the cost of te apartment in the form of a scholarship in the 1098T form @poblob14

And also going off of what you said, room and board never needs to be reported since it is not a qualified expense? My parents rented an apartment this year so if it needs to be reported I would need to collect receipts for the payments, they were all out of pocket. @poblob14

Room and board received as a scholarship may need to be reported on taxes as they could be taxable. Working as an RA is different.

What if it’s not reported as a scholarship? They just said that I get a fee waiver @twoinanddone

@taylorvoline

You need to be honest here. IF you were a RA in 2016, that could have been the 2016-2017 academic year. Perhaps your school doesn’t do these credits until January. If that is the case, your RA compensation could appear on your 2017 tax forms.

At the very least, this supposed fee waiver will be listed on your bursars bill. I don’t know about your parents, but in this household, we didn’t pay any bills,we didn’t have access to ourselves. Our kids had scholarships and the like…and we DID use that bursars bill to help reconcile that with our accountant. Because we were paying the bills, we got a tax credit…and we needed full disclosure of all costs etc for the colleges. Your parent accountant will likelynwant and expect the same.
