Resumes: Chronological vs. Functional?

Should the list of activities/positions/awards in resumes be chronological (most recent first) or functional (most important first) in order? I've read that most EMPLOYERS prefer chronological, since job applicants should have careers that are growing and without any suspicious time lapses or anything. But is it different for a high school student applying to college?? If my resume were functional, it would catch attention much quicker than if it were in chronological order, simply because I am participating in multiple organizations and my most important experiences may not be the most most recent.

Thanks for your advice!

Chronological. A resume that isn’t chronological is harder to read.

It depend on what you’re featuring and how many like activities you have that you want to group together. If you have done many related, but not similar service projects, for example, they could be grouped together (chronological within the section) for emphasis. Ditto for employment, research, sports, etc. Start with the grouping that you feel most strongly about and work your way down.
