Retake the SAT? ACT? for a better chance of a scholarship or will it look bad?

My daughter has taken the ACT twice and the SAT three times. Her best score was SAT 630CR+700M+670W=2000. that is good but just misses some opportunities for better scholarships for her tuition to be covered or a partial scholarship. She needs to get some type of large merit scholarship for college. She won't qualify for Pell grants. We would like to stay under $17k a year that we have to cover for all expenses. The last SAT test went up by 160. One prior test she was sick, another her grandmother had a stroke so I think they effected her scores. ACT she did not do that great on except for Math 30, overall was 26 but she really didn't study for it. She tends to get nervous on standardize testing.

Here are her stats:
4.0 uw / 4.65 w gpa
12+ Honor classes
7 AP/Dual credit
National Honor Society President
Varsity Softball will be 4 yrs, one with a state championship
Varsity Volleyball, captain all 3 yrs-
JV varsity
100+ hours of volunteer work
various academic awards from school

CONS:
not National Merit Scholar
doesn't want to play sports in college
High school doesn't rank

Should she retake the SAT one more time to shoot for 1400+ (M+CR) in order to get additional scholarships?
Will it hurt her chances of being accepted to have taken the SAT 4 times??

She doesn't know where to apply that will give her the best scholarships. She is considering Engineering or Business but hasn't decided.

Since she has already taken it 3 times, it’s not going to be a bad thing if she takes it one more time. If it is a school that averages SAT scores, well, they are going to average in a higher score if the 4th is higher. Many scholarships or merit awards take the highest or even superscore. I think she should, but really prepare for it.

Colleges that give merit will not care how many times she tests.

However, merit scholarships are often based on single seatings (not superscores) and based on M+CR (not writing), so it is in her best interest to test again and again this fall to get the best scores.

Since really only the M+CR matter, have her only practice those sections. Tell her to relax during the W sections…dont hurry…because that score doesnt matter.

For you to keep costs down to about $17k, then your goal should be to pay LESS because costs go up each year. Look at it this way, if you can pay for room, board, books, fees, travel, etc, then that will be about $13k-15k per year (depending on school, distance, etc). So your D would need a full tuition scholarship, so that your family contribution of $17k can cover remaining costs for all 4 years.

Is her 1330 from one sitting? What is her major?

Please look at the pinned threads at the top of this forum for good merit aid options.

The 1330 was in one sitting. She hasn’t made up her mind about a major. She is considering chemical/biochemical engineering or business. It’s hard because normally she knows exactly what she wants. Now she is concerned that she doesn’t know what she wants to do “forever”. I’d like for her to have the ability to change majors without feeling stuck because of a scholarship linked to a specific major.
From the merit thread I did tell her about Alabama, but currently she would have to go into engineering for the full tuition. That is why I wanted her to retest so she can get a 1400 which gives her other options. I didn’t want her not to be accepted somewhere because she took the test several times.
Currently she can attend any of AZ schools as a safety. She really wants to go out of state. Alabama is an option. What do you think her chances would be getting a scholarship for other schools? She really doesn’t want to go anywhere really cold with bitter winters. Some snow is ok.
We can go higher on what we can spend if necessary probably up to 25k without loans. I just don’t want her to get all excited about a school that is 60k+ a year with little or no scholarship. I can’t see going into debt for X school when you can get a degree at Y school for little to no debt. She would love to go to Pepperdine, University of California. …or University of Southern California but I don’t know if she can get in or if it would be worth the price.

The Alabama app is up now, so she should at least apply. If her fall scores go up to a 1400+, she will be awarded the Presidential. Right now, as you know, as a ChemE with a 1330, she would get two awards the 2/3 from the school, 1/3 from engineering, and 2500 from engineering.

You dont have to worry about submitting later fall scores. If they are 1400+, then she will still get the presidential.

Have you visited Bama? If not, you should. At least visit the Bama forum here on CC.

You will meet people from everywhere. It is a very popular forum. Ask anything.

Do you know if Alabama cares how many times she takes the SAT? What about University of South Carolina or Georgia? Could she get in there?
Is it only top 50 schools that multiple test taking will effect?

UK (Kentucky) and Miami(OH) have some merit scholarships as well. Full-tuition is not guaranteed, though.
