Returning student, vocal coach in training. What program?

Hi! I already have a BA, I’m in my mid 40s and I’ve sung off and on all my life. (Musical Theater, gospel choir, college a cappella). I’ve also had a a career as a life coach, stay at home mom and sales professional (advertising). I play a little guitar too.

I want a thorough study of music to perform popular styles: r&b, pop, rock, gospel etc. I also want to be a vocal coach. Kids/teens/adults. I’m not currently interested in musical theater or classical.
I’d like to be in a collegiate environment. Wondering if getting a whole other undergraduate degree makes sense. Able to travel for the right program. Thank you!

Follow - up questions:

What music ed programs are the 1) most flexible /customizable and 2) shortest - 1 or two years instead of 4. Thanks!

These might not be quite the right programs for your needs and ultimate goals (and I’m guessing your BA isn’t in music?), but I wanted to point out some innovative new master’s opportunities at USC that are purposefully flexible and reflective of today’s music industry and climate–surely there are (or will be) others elsewhere following suit.

Thank you! Yes, not a music BA. I will check out the link.

Before you spend lots of money and time, have you discussed your goals with anyone (preferably more than one) currently employed in the manner and circumstances you would like for yourself? Just to be sure your goals are truly realistic?

I don’t mean to be offensive and I don’t know the job possibilities or hiring norms in the disciplines you mention, but I am currently observing the 40 year old son of a friend try to find elementary teaching positions after spending money and time to complete a second degree. Three years of applying with great recommendations. Interviews, but no job. Back home living with Mom. I wouldn’t wish that kind of discouragement on anyone.

Ithaca?

The other route I am considering is starting with https://www.musictogether.com/teach/teacher-training-workshops

My current music skills & knowledge are not advanced.

Momofadult, not offended at all. I much appreciate your observation and comment. I am not pursuing this as a main source of income. Also, the teachers I know doing this (or similar) are very entrepreneurial and combine their teaching work with their other businesses.

Entrepreneurship is not for everyone, however I think developing the skills and mindset to generate one’s own income is vital for musicians. I haven’t figured it out yet but some have. I am new to this forum so I don’t know if it has a private message function but if so please feel free to contact me offline to connect with your friend’s son.

Applying for and getting grants has its own challenges. If your friend’s son hasn’t already, he could look into it.

Prodesse. I meant to write I prefer somewhere warmer. Or at least south of where I grew up (NY/NJ).

I’m confused. Do you want to be a vocal coach or teacher? For what age group? Most coaches are for adults and are pianists. Teachers are for all ages with different backgrounds and degrees depending on the environment/emphasis of study (school, university or studio for example).

Momofadult, this is the link I meant to include.
