So i wrote in my other thread about not getting any interviews for summer internships. However, i did manage to get an REU. The thing is, I have to decide on my REU in 2 weeks.

I've done 3 internships for the government so I was hoping to find something in industry thing time but of course, this won't be possible if I take the REU. I'm going to keep finding for for the next 2 weeks but it will be difficult.

I've been looking for employment since...November and I haven;t had much luck. The thing is that a lot of companies told me that with the economy, they won't know if they will hire until March / April which is way past the deadline for accepting the REU and will cut into my exam prep.

You should also consider what kind of project you will be working on for the REU. If it is something you really have no interest in, then don't do it. The last thing you want to do is work on something you absolutely know you don't like just because it's better than doing nothing at all. Also, most REU don't begin notifying acceptances and rejections until early or mid March. So maybe you can ask for an extension on that deadline.

Industry internships are going to be hard to get this year. Limited positions available plus a lot of competition will make it very difficult.

The REU is something I'm interested in so tahts good. Originally the deadline was mid March but my Prof decided to move it up a few weeks... Maybe i can get a week back from it.

If you are at all interested in grad school, and the REU is a sure offer for this year with $, I would seriously consider the REU. It could give you some insight into a research area that an internship may not offer. If you have already participated in internships/have job exp, the REU could also enhance your resume. The economy is in the toilet right now--many people are looking for internships and many companies have outright cancelled internship ops--if the REU is a sure thing at this point, I would seriously consider the option!

Yup, i'm definately interested in grad school. I've heard stories where ppl have been offered internships at companies only to have them cancelled during exam time leaving them unemployed. I wondering if this is more likely to happen due to the economy. I'm leaning towards the REU right now.

About the money, the REU is offering only $10/hr which is about half of what some interns make. The thing is that i'd be able to live at home and save on rent and food.

so i've sent out literally 100s of email starting in November. I've been getting some back in the past fews days. No interviews yet but they're asking for when I'm able to work so it seems pretty promising. I'm not sure when the interviews would take place or if the decision would be made in time for my REU deadline.
