I'm incredibly honored to be selected as a Rice/Baylor Medical Scholar, and I was also awarded a merit scholarship to Rice. However, I'm still undecided, as I was accepted to Harvard early action and I also was offered a full ride to Duke and UNC. On a side note, I'm not sure if I want to be a doctor, but the program is very tempting. I would love it if anyone could offer any suggestions for me!

Rice with a merit scholarship sounds good, but Duke full ride sounds VERY good. You have a VERY tough choice to make. Well done wish you the best!!!

If you are not sure about medicine, I will strongly suggest that you drop the Rice/Baylor option. You must be a very strong student based on the various admissions you have so far, and some with full aid. If Medicine is what you really want to do [you can make your mind during UG] then you will easily get in to medicine in the regular admission process.

Do not commit to Medicine unless you are sure about it. If you can, can you post your stats? You seem to have amazing admissions.

Good Luck.

I do not know about the Rice/Baylor program specifically, but I know it is very good. However, I don’t think I would drop it before even giving it a try. I’m sure you could drop it down the road if you determine medicine is not the direciton you want to go.

If Harvard is not an affordable option, then eliminate that from the list for now. Consider it for grad school.

Where do you live currently? Have you visited Rice and Duke/UNC?

The only real 2 cents I have and it probably isn’t worth even that, is that my S’s high school history teacher suggested heavily that Duke would not be a good choice (for my S). Rice has been a terrific fit for him and he has learned so much and has grown as a person and loves life in a way he never has before.

Good luck to you. The clock is ticking :-)

I’m not really sure why you applied for the Rice/Baylor Medical Scholars program if you’re not sure you want to be a doctor. It’s a very rigorous program that is for people who know for sure they want to be in medicine. In fact, it greatly surprises me that anyone would get into the program without showing Rice their love for the field and for the program…hmm.

I love Rice, I love community service, and I love biology. I think medicine could combine those interests, but I don’t have much exposure to it. I really just applied to the program because I thought it would be a good experience, and to see what would happen. I wasn’t expecting to make it, and now that I have… it’s going to be a touch choice.

As for my stats, I guess I have the grades that most everyone else has that are applying to/attending these top schools. The thing that sets me apart, in my opinion, is that I do what I love and I do it to a very high degree. I’m nationally recognized in the arts, science, and service, so I suppose that’s probably why.

I live in Texas, and Rice is relatively close by! I’ve visited Duke and UNC for their finalist weekends, too. :)

Thank you all so, so much!

Go to Harvard!. You can certainly get into a better med school.
If money matters, go to Duke that prepares you as a strong med applicant and can get into competitive med schools. Hope it’s an easy choice!

@jacquelynn,
Congratulation for your acceptance from many wonderful schools.
I agree with vbv8dad!
Since you accepted many competitive top schools, you will be able to go to great Medical School 4 years later if you like.

I don’t think there’s any truth to the idea that Harvard would get you into a better med school than Rice. Even if it were true, though, and Harvard med school rate is 5% better, who cares? College is an important time, and though several schools can get you into med school, socially schools can be very different.

Go where you want to go

Good luck with your decision

If OP is who I think she is, she chose Duke. I hope she’ll check in here and let us know.

I say duke all the way. Free ride?! I’d take a free ride at a public state school before paying 250k+ for Ivy League any day! Gotta think about life after college too you know. Plus, come on, it’s duke! What more do you want?!

She picked Duke apparently. Well done.

@jacquelynn could you post your stats if you dont mind please? im applying to rice/baylor and i was wondering if i could see if i had a fair shot

^ You could post your stats and many of us could give you feedback. While I don’t know specifically, I think that you would need to be in the top 25 percentile of applicants.
