I searched the archives on this subject, but I didn't really find anyone asking the same question. I am a freshman at Rice. During high school I attended a Methodist church and it was interesting, but I've always been curious about Judaism. I am Jewish by heritage, but only my grandparents were "practicing Jews." Basically--I wasn't raised Jewish, but I'm interested in discovering more about Judaism--can one attend Hillel even if one is not a "practicing Jew" or would it be sort of odd?

Of course! You can show up at Hillel even if you aren’t Jewish. From what I’ve heard it’s getting much more active this year and there are lots of events planned.

And there’s a Jewish Studies program on campus with some interesting classes, lectures [Rice University Jewish Studies at Rice](http://jewishstudies.rice.edu/Content.aspx?id=47)

Claraksi, you may have come across this thread while you were checking the archives. It has some thoughts about connecting comfortably. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/rice-university/1132530-jewish-life-rice.html?highlight=jewish

Of course you can come to Hillel! We have lunches most Wednesday at Brochstein if you just want a casual environment to explore Judaism. And of course you’re welcome to come to Shabbat services/dinner on Fridays. There are quite a few events coming up. Check out the hillel website: [Houston Hillel | Houston Hillel](http://houstonhillel.org/wp/).

And FYI, you won’t be the only freshman there who did not grow up Jewish. I have one friend in mind who has been coming to Hillel because he is interested in Judaism. It wouldn’t be odd at all for you to attend. And of course, you don’t have to go every week. Go once a month. Every now and then. It doesn’t really matter. You’re welcome to get involved. Contact Rabbi Kenny Weiss if you want to.

Thanks for the helpful replies; I’m definitely considering it!
