Rice is a far superior school in terms of prestige and academics.

Unless there is a reason for you to choose New Orleans over Houston, there are no other reason why you should choose Tulane.

Careful making assumptions about prestige. In the northeast (at least here in NY), Rice is barely known. Until I began looking at schools, I had heard of it but had no idea it was good. Around here, the Rice name by itself doesn’t impress.

Rice is far superior. Tulane is a middle of the road school, albeit in a better location for young adults.

Rice is far better. Tulane known better in northeast because it typically attracts many Jews from northeast.

Because Jews tend to be attracted to good schools. Which begs the question, why is Rice not well known in the northeast? Around here, it is easily the least known of all the top schools.

I am shocked by the folks who say that NO is a better place than Houston. Visiting both places as a tourist, Houston blows away NO for activities, restaurants, culture, diversity, arts, opportunity, partying (except the one week of mardis gras), etc. I even considered jobs in both places and just couldn’t imagine picking NO over Houston. Plus you have the large medical complex next doorto Rice for research if you were interested. I could care less about prestige. You have to go where you are a good fit to help you best achieve your goals.

And not many people in the south have heard of Dartmouth/Amherst/Williams, are you also going to question their quality/prestige?

Being known for attracting Jewish students does not equal being a top academic school. The range is just as wide as it is for more Gentile schools. Tulane is more in the Syracuse BU zone. Good not great.

Hofstra attracts many more Jewish students than Pomona College yet almost everyone on this forum would agree that Pomona is a far better school than Hofstra. Besides, why should the preferences of Jewish Northeasterners dictate which schools are good and bad? Most NY Jews would probably balk at the idea of going to school in Texas, but that doesn’t mean that all Texan schools are bad, only that NYers might not be keen on going to school there.

Oh and fwiw, my current rabbi did her UG at Rice.

I would not brag about not having heard of Rice. Most educated people have heard of Rice and respect it highly. Most universities are regional. Harvard and perhaps a couple others have national reputations, but the majority of universities have regional appeal. However, any university or Rice’s stature will be well known among the highly educated across the country.

I also agree with FrugalDoctor. NO is nothing special. With the exception of Mardi Gras, I do not think NO has much to offer. It is a very overrated city. I am no fan of Houston either, but in my experience, it has more to offer.

New Orleans is pretty much a dump. Houston has a lot more to offer. Rice is a better school.
