Sooo. Im a junior in hs and will either do biology or biochemistry as a major. I have narrowed down to rice (I know, I have a small chance) but mostly university of Miami or Tulane. I live in TX so Tulane wouldnt be THAT far. I see that us news has ranked both of them very close to eachother. So based on the whole experience, Miami or Tulane?

Which has a stronger program in biology and biochemistry? Look at supporting fields, how strong are they (chemistry, physics, etc.)? Consider the curriculum at both of these colleges, which fits your needs better? More importantly, you are not just getting an education, you are getting a college experience. Do NOT pick your college based on perceptions. Do you think you will fit in? What clubs would you join? Would you go greek? Really do research on these schools and do not worry about what people on CC say. In the end, this is a very personal decision. Assuming that financially both are options and assuming you are admitted, pick the one that fits you.

On a side note: I was admitted to Tulane’s Honors Program, but I did not receive the BEST financial aid package from them and I did not enjoy my visit. I am now at the College of William and Mary, because it seemed like my best academic option, but I have changed my major and realized that I really don’t fit in. I’m transferring out at the end of this year. Don’t be me. Good luck!

Miami and Tulane are pretty equivalent schools to my mind. I agree with lexieam, you should look into the program you are interested in at both schools. You should also try to visit both schools and see if you feel more comfortable/at home at one than the other.

The good news is that both Tulane and Miami have non-binding early action so you can apply to both (as well as Rice ED if you want) and see what happens. Perhaps one school will give you a larger financial award which could make the choice easier. No need to make a decision now.

You’re a junior. This isn’t the time to being doing this. Wait til you determine your financial situation, you have your best test scores, and you have acceptances and FA pkgs in hand.

Tulane and UMiami are both very good privates. They’re both going to have more-than-adequate bio/bio chem programs…especially since both have SOMs.

right now, talk to your parents about how much they’ll pay. That answer will likely determine where you should apply.
What is your goal? med school?

Well, looking at merit aid, both are around the same price and affordable for me and my parents. My overall goal is to go into pharmacology and work for pharmaceutical companies in R & D. I have also been looking at UD but worried about their relatively new reputation and lack of substantial research money.
