I can't decide between Rice and UT-Austin( Dean's Scholars program - science ) . Dean's Scholars program gives science major students broad resources, research opportunitiy, small classes, etc but I am not sure whether science program is better at Rice or UT. And undergraduate experiences...

I have trouble understanding why this question pops up so often. To me there is no comparison. If you want big-time sports and/or it is a financial issue, go to UT. Otherwise, there is no question that Rice is the better choice.

Well clearly if there was no question that Rice was the better choice, this thread would not exist. When these threads pop up, I think it's best for us, the repliers, to try to understand the student and his or her needs and goals, and then choose the school that matches the best instead of overgeneralizing and saying, in all situations except for ___, x university is better.

depends on what one is looking for

UT = stronger faculty, higher ranked academic departments across the board (except architecture), tremendous resources (i.e., labs, libraries, museums, performing arts centers), more academic variety, and yes, big time sports

Rice = stronger peers, smaller campus, more hand holding possible due to smaller class sizes and better student/faculty ratios, more likely to interact with out of state since there is no 90% minimum in-state law for undergrad like UT, big city resources available outside campus

I have visited both schools, and I liked both campuses. Each campus had its own unique character. Considering many factors, I like Rice because of undergraduate experience it offers, and I like UT because of large resources, and faculty. I want to spend my next four years in an institute where I can have wonderful academic and personal experiences.

I would like to point out that people who haven't investigated the Dean's Scholar's Program at UT can't give you a very informed opinion (and I think very few people on CC have actually been on campus as a potential Dean's Scholars to see what it's really like). My son was also considering both. I honestly believe that he could be happy and successful in either program. His decision was made more from the "gut" than from information, because he knew they both would provide excellent research opportunities, small classes & involved professors. He just felt more of a connection with the people he met at Rice & that gave it the edge for him.

I would suggest that you try a little experiment. Pretend that you've just decided to go to one of them. See how you feel about it, what your thoughts are about that decision, etc. Just sit with it for a bit. Then try it with the other one. If you can distinguish a recognizable difference in your reaction, then you probably have your answer. If you can't, then you will probably do just as well and be just as successful at either one of them and it won't really matter.
