^ What about the confederate flags though?

I am from New England but while I am proud of the area for its pioneering spirit, I dont feel that New england could survive solo. Thats where I find it weird when people want to secede from the Union or argue that Texas rightfully can and will support itself.

Thats not pride, thats plain stupidity.

And yes Perry is a moron. I wish Mayor White would run for governor… :)

Hey, Mayor White’s gonna own the senate come 2010 so it’s all good ;)

Texas pride can seem creepy but it’s legit. I wanted OUT of Texas for college, but ended up at Rice and luckily found a weird, weird love for the state at the end of my senior year - spent a lot of time roadtripping out to West Texas and camping around the hill country and just fell in love. We’ve got a very unique, quirky culture and intriguing history, and yes, there’s a crazy conservative element - but that’s not all there is, and you’ll find MANY well-cultured, educated liberals (just as an example) who, you know, throw on cowboy boots and go jeeping in Big Bend for the weekend. It’s just what we do. And there’s no need to be freaked out.

A lot of the Ivy recognition is a result of a concentrated level of high income earners in the money centers, NY, Boston, etc. Rice’s alumni, except for Texas, are more spread out.

Some of the posts are interesting and demonstrate a lot of common characteristics to Florida, except that Florida’s coastal areas are predominantly made up of Northeasterner transplants---- the natives have the bumper stickers and flags. Also, Key West tried to secede from the Union. With the current recognition of the SouthWest as a place to go, Texas may start to be influenced by nonTexans, for good or worse.

Antarius, patriotism for a state does not equal support for the governor. I think there are a lot of people who would have taken offense with that statement a few years ago if you had replaced “state” with country and “governor” with president.

I love Texas. I love that its outline is the third-most recognizable shape internationally, behind the Coca-Cola logo and Mickey Mouse. I love the amazing diversity of cultures. I love that you have people at Rice studying Kierkegaard during the week then going out and bringing back a deer in a cooler on the weekend and making it into venison sausage. I also really love Houston. Here, check this site out: HIWI. One of the guys who set it up is a rice grad.
