Rice still #17 slot in US News ratings

happymedstudent, you have failed to tell me why giving out generous aid is a negative trait. Every school should concern itself with making college more affordable for more people.

Also, I’m assuming you’ve never lived in Texas, since I could just as easily say that East Texas, West Texas, the Valley, and the Panhandle are like four separate countries.

happymedstudent-

How on earth to you come to the conclusion that Rice < Stanford in everyway. Stanford rocks, so does Rice. However, the distinguishing factor that makes Stanford ranked with HYPM is the fact that it has great grad schools. Rice, on the other hand, is completely undergraduate focused. This kinda is detrimental to Rice as far as USNews rankings go. Additionally, last I heard Stanford only had an 85% med school acceptance rate while Rice has a 90+ acceptance rate. Finally, Rice is a much smaller college that has a lovely residential system…so, at least for me, the set up there is a vastly superior to that of Stanford.

dont forget sports
Its also to Rice’s disadvantage (as far as sports publicity goes) that the school doesnt bathe athletes in cash
maybe they spend their merit based aid resources on helping kids with academic talent rather than athleticism?

An outstanding football player i know at Rice is receiving free textbooks and 1/2 off tuition
he’s a smart guy who can handle both aspects of his life

whereas a junior last year at my old high school was offered a full ride to stanford to play football (every little expense covered)
the only catch was that he had to enroll and pass at least one ap course
that’s saying something seeing as this kid made consistent C’s and D’s in the lower level classes

I dont believe Rice would be so desperate to boost its athletic program that it would recruit a student without the ability to be a functioning student-athlete

^ Someone obviously didn’t get into Stanford.

Honestly, a Rice student talking trash about Stanford is just too cute for words!

A quick google search suggests that you’re either ignorant or lying:

The avg. hs gpa of the Stanford football team is 3.63. (See 1st link.)

The avg. SAT of the Stanford football team is ABOVE 1100, while the avg. SAT of the Rice football team is BELOW 1100. (See both links.)

Stanford = Rejected Ivies; Rice = Rejected BY Ivies

“Additionally, last I heard Stanford only had an 85% med school acceptance rate while Rice has a 90+ acceptance rate.”

Maybe Stanford students aim for better med (and other professional) schools:

“Finally, Rice is a much smaller college that has a lovely residential system…so, at least for me, the set up there is a vastly superior to that of Stanford.”

If you care so much about the residential system, you could’ve gone to Yale. Oh yeah, the “choice” was made for you.

“Its also to Rice’s disadvantage (as far as sports publicity goes) that the school doesnt bathe athletes in cash

Cory Booker, the current mayor of Newark, NJ, is a Rhodes Scholar and Yale Law School graduate. He is also a former Stanford football player.

Can you name any former Rice football players who are Rhodes Scholars and/or Yale Law School graduates? I am asking because like most people (including Rice students), I know and care absolutely nothing about the Rice football program, so I am not quite informed about this matter.

Moral of the story: Stanford offers athletic scholarships only to recruits who are excellent students. Cory Booker is just one of them.

None of the stuff you guys have been talking about for the last three pages has any impact on USNWR rankings. They consider the peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving, and graduation rate performance. “Northeast bias”, lack of good sports teams, geographic diversity, and most of the stuff mentioned has little to no impact on the ranking. It’s pointless to try to defend your school from some little list. Either dismiss the list as stupid or do something to improve national perception of your school. This definitely isn’t making me think better of Rice. It’s fine to talk about how good your school is, but when you start talking about how your school is better than other schools, schools none of you have attended, researched or visited, you go too far. As fun as this thread is, I’d say you all should think of a new tactic for making Rice look good to all the prospective students reading this message board.

happymedstudent, you’re quoting data from 2004 about the Rice football team. That article was speaking positively of Rice’s athletic/academic achievement, and you’re using it to talk about how our football team is underachieving academically. You should also notice that Rice managed to recruit two of the five D-I football players that year with 1300+ SAT scores.

Stop ■■■■■■■■ the Rice forum and go away.

+1

Happymedstudent-
I thought you only talked trash about Penn…

^ I don’t “talk trash” about any schools. I merely offer my honest opinions about them.

This is a “college admissions and search” forum, isn’t it?

Your “honest opinion” seems pretty slanted and unnecessarily, unjustly critical. Many schools offer merit scholarships. That doesnt mean they “buy” their top students. Yes this is a college admissions and search site-- not a “let me badmouth schools I look down my nose at” site. People will quickly identify you as a ■■■■■ and ignore your “advice”. Your call.

^ I don’t really care what you or any other CC poster thinks of me or my “advice”! Thank you very much.

^^^^ Well, that is certainly apparent…

happymedstudent spends his day bashing schools that he (a recent high school grad, at best) believes might challenge Stanford in some way. It’s very amusing and, yes, irritating. He is a ■■■■■ and can not get past the fact that Penn tied with Stanford in the rankings. Vanderbilt and Rice also seem to annoy him to no end. This is a “one school wonder” and he feels very insecure if anyone claims a school that isn’t his has some strengths. The fact that he posed as a med student until he got “outed” tells you all you need to know.

^ Stop stalking me, cougar!

Don’t flatter yourself. I assumed you were going after schools to which I have a connection. How cute that you are trying to get my attention!

^ Sorry, I am not interested in HYS Law rejects!

I imagine prospective Rice applicants are saying to themselves…
“Wow, these people are really confrontational.”
“Rice students think they need a list to validate their college choice.”
“I was going to apply to Rice, but now I’m not.”

I’m saying to myself…
“Wow, I’m glad I’m not going there.”

So basically, this thread is bad. Yes.
