rice v. pitt???

i'm thinking about going to rice, but since i'm doing graduate school(med), i don't want to end up in $20000 in debt. anybody know any good cost cutting techniques? ppl have told me that working over the school year helps, but how much does that earn? also, if i board outside of my campus at rice, how much would that save me? and i also got full tuition to pitt, is it worth the extra $20000 to go to rice instead of pitt??? seriously, any sort of help would be nice...plz

Working summers could definitely reduce that 20k a lot.

And I would go to Rice over Pitt without a doubt if you will only be in the hole 20k.

I know many people are debt happy on this site, but keep in mind the additional debt from medical school and years in residency.

Remember, that extensive hours of work are very difficult as a science major. Especially with hours in the lab and for studying. Because of the competition to medical school, you really should focus on your studies and complete service learning hours at area hospitals.

It's ultimately your choice, but make sure you consider all of your options.

latoya, i don't really know much about the lab work, but if i work in a lab during the school year, can't i get paid for that work(or find some internship, etc)?

oh, and i'm going to be majoring in psych and (business or engineering), so i don't think i'll have quite the difficulty of a science major

Psych and business shouldn't be too bad in terms of time to work. Engineering .. you will be doing a looooooooot of math problems.. it will be your life...but well worth the salary.

Some research asssistantships are paid, but are competitive.

You should think about approximately how many hours you can work a week, and the appropriate compensation. Something to consider: although on-campus jobs pay less, they tend to be more flexible in terms of final exams and other schoolwork.
