Rice vs. Northwestern + -$30,000

Hey, I would very much like help from those who are in or have been to Northwestern. Thanks so much!

I got accepted into several schools recently, and my top two choices are between Rice and Northwestern. To go to Northwestern, I would need to find $30,000 more somewhere, somehow. Could all please give me suggestions on if this difference could be justified? I am planning on engineering though mostly undecided (NU and Rice seem to be of similar rank though).

Some reasons I would choose Northwestern over Rice (if the cost was the same):
1) I am a native Houstonian, so I would very much like a change in environment/life style
2) I was invited to be a Murphy Scholar (whatever that is... )
3) Chicago has the CHICAGO SYMPHONY!!!
4) Engineering Co-op program

Thanks again!

I’m a strong supporter of NU but in your case, I’d go to Rice. I don’t know but $30,000 seems a lot to me when both schools will provide you with a comparably excellent location. I got into Rice too when I was applying and strongly considered it but in my case, NU turned out to be slightly cheaper. It was also better in my major (soft science).

A minor difference might be prestige. NU seems more prestigious nationally and has greater social cachet. Rice wins in Texas though, I bet.

Go to Rice for the $, esp if you mean $30,000 more per year.

Thanks for the advice! Yes, it is per year, but I don’t think Rice would give me much need-based next year.
