I have younger brother who's a rising senior. He's thinking of applying ED to Rice, but my parents are hesitant considering the binding nature. He's interested in studying math/applied math, computer science, and economics. We live in Massachusetts, and UMass is a very affordable school. I think both schools offer distinct experiences, but I'm curious to know how people would compare these schools, especially since UMass has a strong CS program (top 20 in grad rankings). Our parents want to go the affordability route, but I think the overall undergrad experience at Rice is better. My brother's interested in working in tech after graduation, preferably in San Fran, Boston, or NYC. The cost difference wouldn't be too bad, i.e. Rice may be more expensive, but our parents can afford it. It's more of whether the cost is justified.

There is an enormous difference between UMass and Rice in my opinion. While I really can’t opine on your financial situation, Rice might be worth the extra cost.

It depends on his goal. If his goal is attending Rice, that’s one thing. If his goal is working in tech in San Fran, Boston, or NYC, then Rice is largely irrelevant; Rice is one of many possible schools that can provide excellent preparation to that end.

I am a student in the computer science program at Rice and am extremely happy. The courses are challenging and the job opportunities are fantastic. We have great relationships with tech companies in Austin, San Francisco, and Seattle. I had no problem getting an internship my sophomore year, and am looking forward to applying to more internships next year! On top of that, the Rice undergrad experience is second to none. If you can afford it, and you like the experience Rice has to offer, I would go for it. Not sure if this is relevant, but I transferred to Rice after my freshmen year from Northeastern; definitely the best decision I made.

Both have great CS programs, it really comes down to whether or not you will be able to afford Rice without financial stress.
