I received a merit scholarship at both schools. However, Richmond would end up costing about a sixth of what Rice would, and at Rice I would have to take out a loan to attend with possible work study. I would graduate Richmond with virtually no debt or the need to worry about working. I was also accepted to the Monroe Scholar program at William and Mary, but it's a distant third. Opinions? I am tearing my hair out over this choice.

What do you intend to study/major in? What are your eventual career goals? Do you plan to go to grad school?

I’m planning on studying congitive science, which both schools have. And grad school is definitely in my plans. But my estimated $20,000 debt after graduating from Rice is not helpful, obviously, if I do plan on further schooling. Does the name matter that much, is I guess the ultimate question.

My friend who looked into both schools tells me that Rice is more diverse than Richmond. Personally, I feel like these would be two different environments to be in. Maybe if you focused on that aspect, it might make the decision easier?

I suggest visiting both, if you haven’t already. Go where you believe you will be happiest. Although both are small schools on impressive campuses, I feel their atmospheres are different. I suggest you go to the following websites to discern differences from a student’s perspective: uni go. com (without the space.) or college p rowler.com (also remove the spaces).

And to be honest, I don’t think $20,000 debt after you graduate is too bad. That’s about $5,000/year. Yes, its still substantial, but I don’t think its big enough to choose a school simply based on which is offering more money.

You can’t go wrong with either though (although Rice is slightly more prestigious in my opinion).
