thanks
D and SIL have a fingerprint digital lock on their front door. It refuses to recognize my fingerprints and unlock the door for me. Weāve re-entered my fingerprint data 4 times, used different fingers but still no luck. App accepts my fingerprint initially for the set up, but then fails to recognize them ever again. Very frustrating esp since there is no key for their front door. Apparently I wash my hands so often than my fingerprints are always worn down and canāt be read. SIL finally set up a passcode specifically for me.
Their lock (U-bolt Pro) runs on batteries and it sends a warning via cell phone text whenever batteries start to run low so SIL can replace them. No idea how the batteries lasts. Kids have been in the house since the end of July and havenāt needed to replace them yet.
@shawbridge - Did you pick a security system? We have not. Hubby was looking at something that takes advantage of our NAS storage, but my sister just sent me info about a good sale with Ringā¦ made me think of the topic again.
We have 3 digital locks, 2 at one home, 1 at another. Work great. We have a few combinations on them. One for us, one for friends who sometimes do favors for us or borrow things when we are away, one for contractors and house watchers - we change that combo sometimes. So nice to have that available for our grown children who sometimes come from out of town to use a house.
What brand of digital locks do you use? Weāve been meaning to get the locks changed - would like it so we can set a code and get into the house, rather than using keys. H currently leaves the door unlocked when he goes out for a run.
Schlage is the brand for our digital locks
Our digital locks are Simpli-safe.
I have not gotten cameras yet. I have purchased wifi Google Nest cameras, but we are installing a new network using Ubiquity Unifi hardware (SME rather than home) and he has been urging me to get PoE (power over ethernet cameras) that use ethernet rather than wifi. If so, I think we will go with Reolink.
To me getting good locks is a higher priority than camera. The first challenge will be door alignment .Our house has settled, so it is very hard for me to get the doors locked, deadbolt harder. Hubby can do it, so he does not think itās a big deal. Also I would like a better situation for door into garage - always open, and I think that garage door opener systems are easy targets.
Thanks @Colorado_mom. You are right. We are doing a major renovation. I tried the deadbolt on one and it doesnāt line up, so Iāll ask the carpenter tomorrow to make sure it lines up.
The cameras are more for my amusement. We live in a very low-crime area and our house is actually hard to find and except in winter, canāt be seen at all from the road. We donāt have much to steal that is valuable. Computers and huge TVs, I guess. The valuable stuff is probably my wifeās art, but no one is going to steal that. There are a couple of dealers who have sold pieces that collectors have bought, but it is not active or liquid. The last time someone asked ShawWife, she suggested they donate the piece to a museum and get the tax deduction.
Plus, I want the camera that looks out the back on the river so I can see the animals that pass through the yard.
We installed a floodlight camera, and it has been capturing all sorts of wildlife movement through our yard! A trio of deer or a couple of coyotes slowly moving along the bushesā¦ very entertaining to watch. Iām sure you will be similarly entertained because it sounds like your place is surrounded by forest.
