You were a pioneer; a woman ahead of (the) your time; you revolutionized women’s fashion, and released an entire generation from the bondage of dressing like their mothers in tweedy skirts, twinsets and pearlsl!
Who wore Short Shorts? - I did!
Hot Pants? Yes!
Minis Skirts? Yes. Yes, Yes!!!
RIP, Mary Quant
My D and I loved Mary Quant designs. We went to the MQ exhibit in London, and even before that my D got a MQ inspired daisy tattoo. Legendary.
Wore Hotpants and knee high white boots to The Osmond Brothers concert 1970.
HaHa! The Osmonds! Donny was my sister’s heart throb!
Mine was David Cassidy - it was so sad how he ended his days
I loved him, too. My first crush was Bobby Sherman.
Who got sent to the principal’s office because their dress was too short?
I wore hot pants too.
I was taught by nuns, we didn’t dare; nobody wanted a beating !
Not me. But I did get scolded by Dunkin’ Donuts for not shortening my too-long uniform (I’m 5’2”) on a summer job. Glad Mom was willing to do it because my superb seamstress grandmother was no longer sewing at that point.
Hot pants and mini skirts were the reasons our high school administrators changed the dress code to allow girls to wear pants instead of dresses and skirts. I think it was 1971 when the vice-principals sent home a lot of girls in hot pants on the first day of school. Most of them came back in mini skirts. Soon after the administration caved deciding girls in pants wasn’t such a bad thing after all.
To the teens of the late sixties-early seventies: many thanks from the teens of the late seventies-early eighties.
Quant brought style, comfort, and architectural sharpness to young women’s casual clothing. I love that aesthetic. Time to bring it back. No more schlubby athleisurewear please!
I was also taught by nuns (and a few priests) in high school but my friends and I still rolled the waists of our uniform skirts to be fingertip length. Yes, we got caught. We continued to do it anyway.
I loved Mary Quant and attempted to copy some of her styles when I sewed my own clothes. I learned to do hidden zippers on the side of the dresses to give them a sleeker look. By sewing my own bell bottoms, I saved enough to buy skinny ribbed sweaters to wear with them. I made a couple of variations on a tunic and pants outfit that I’d still like to have the pattern for today.
It’s shocking to think I was in 5th grade before I was allowed to wear pants to school. I had forgotten all about thst.
When elementary school age, my sister and I were dressed in dresses even for playtime. My parents were not heartless. Ha, when it was really cold, we were allowed to wear pants to the bus stop…. underneath our dress I can still remember sitting on the cloak room floor pulling of my boots (and sometimes bread bags off feet, if boots were leaky) and pants.
