For my UNC supplement, I have written about a risky topic- religion. Since UNC is a south state school, will my essay be too risky? My essay is about my interaction with religion, the way i broke out of religion (basically, became an atheist), and my fascination with religion, regardless. I grew up in a country where religious freedom was not really tolerated.

Should I scrap this? Or send it in?

That is a tough question. You are talking about something that is meaningful to you and will definitely be heartfelt. Colleges are generally very liberal, even southern ones. I feel like if you write the essay and don’t offend anyone in the process, it would be fine.

Talk about how atheism affected you and how it came about.
DON’T talk about how you disliked religious people and that is why you became atheist.
Write about why it interests you etc…don’t indirectly or directly slight a person who is religious.

This is really important. You don’t want to say anything negative about other people.

thanks for the advice. After writing, I realized my essay doesn’t really emphasis on my atheism but more on how I can see things from different perspectives. I use my experience of being forced to “be” religious as a stressor that affects my choices, in a positive way.
