This week I will travel to Valparaiso University (excited about that) and then drive to Chicago for a day. I need some info about Chicago. What are the good tourist traps to visit? Where are the good places for deep dish pizzas? What parts of town do I want to stay out of? Is the White Sox ballpark in a bad neighborhood (If yes, where are the safer areas to park and walk around. I'm use to going into neighborhoods that get a bad rap though when I go to Yankee Stadium. I can't wait to see the White Sox game... too bad the Cubbies weren't in town on Tuesady though.

So you aren't staying in Chicago and you need to get to the 7 pm game on Tuesday at Sox Park?

The first thing you should know is that the major southern expressway, the Dan Ryan (I90-94) is under construction and usage has been reduced by half. This puts a lot of traffic on to the alternate routes, so you need to allow extra time since backups can happen anywhere.

Two recommendations for a day's visit: the first is the Museum of Science and Industry, 57th Street and Lake Shore Drive. It's a huge museum that can take days to see. They just opened an exhibit on the science of Leonardo DaVinci. The surrounding neighborhood, Hyde Park, has lots of restaurants, bookstores, lakefront park, Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House and the University of Chicago. This about 6 miles south of downtown; for the game, you can head up to 35th Street and west to Sox Park.

Another plan is to head to downtown, praying you can park. The Millennium garage in Grant Park (exit Lake Shore Drive at Monroe, turn right on Columbus) is the cheapest parking, but it could be full. Grant Park is where you'll find the Art Institute and new Millennium Park; also, it's easy to walk through downtown from here. Chicago Segway has riding tours of the lakefront; the Chicago Architecture Foundation has walking and boat tours.

Giordano's Pizza

There is one in Hyde Park, if you will be going there anyway. Gret stuffed pizza. . .

You might want to check out the Oriental Institute on THe U. of C. campus, located on University Ave.
