Rolling admission at top schools: Apply EARLY!

Purdue is another school with rolling admissions. Two years ago my son applied the day after Labor Day in September, the earliest allowed, and was accepted on his birthday three weeks later. It was fabulous knowing he had such a great acceptance in-hand so early in the process.

<p>Purdue’s rolling admissions changes slightly for 2009. Sudents can send in their apps as early as Sept., but there will now be an initial decision release date of Dec. 5th, 2008 after 5 pm.</p>

<p>No more applying to Purdue in early Sept. and knowing you’re admitted by late Sept.</p>

<p>What about University of Oregon? Does this hold true for them as wel for O student?</p>

<p>^^ Oregon has 2 admission levels, basically an early action and regular admission. Like a modified rolling. But for big scholarships, you MUST apply to the early one. So for any qualified student, I’d definitely say apply early there.</p>

<p>It is almost certainly a good idea to apply early. As colleges and universities fill seats in their respective rosters, they often ratchet up the minimum requirements for admission. What does that mean? Well, for example, it may mean that a student with an sat score that is 1500 may gain admission to a school in December, but by march the answer would be no. Why is this? This is mainly because the school changes the requirements to avoid the “dump” pile. So, a score that may be ok a few weeks prior, may be deemed an automatic throw-away or non-read as spots become less available.</p>

<p>It means “Immediate Decision Plan.”

The Immediate Decision Plan (IDP) is designed to help students develop a more informed opinion of the College and to accelerate the admission process during a daylong session. Candidates participate in a seminar conducted by a Bard faculty member and meet with an admission counselor. Most recently the IDP seminars have focused on the study of mathematics and science in the liberal arts context. The admission committee will mail decisions the following workday. Note: Only the College makes an immediate decision; accepted candidates may wait until May 1 to notify the College of their enrollment plans. For IDP, the $50 nonrefundable application fee is required to be sent in with the reservation form.

<p>That’s interesting, thanks Chedva! Neat how it’s only on the school’s part…still leaving some options open for the student. Will look into that at other schools!</p>
