Rolling Admissions

Daughter is applying to both USMA and USNA for admission to Class of 2016. She attends high school in NJ, which finishes in latter part of June. Because of time out of school to attend West Point and Navy SLS, followed by NJ Girl's State week after school gets out. she won't be taking her Junior year finals till end of June, and, with teachers gone for summer, likely won't have second semester grades on her transcript until after sschool resumes in the fall.
We're of the impression that, with the rolling admissions policy at both academies, the sooner there is a completed application package to look at, the better. When do the academies begin looking at application packages? If the spring grades aren't available till early September, is that likely to be a setback? Also, recognizing that requirements for nomination applications vary among members of Congress and Senators, is the anticipated delay in receiving grades likely to delay that process? Thanks

When do the academies begin looking at application packages?
Normally in late July early August. The first LOA’s go out normally after SLS.

If the spring grades aren’t available till early September, is that likely to be a setback?
Yes, maybe.

I think a concerted effort needs to be made with the schools to get the finals done and the transcripts ready prior to Sept. Most high schools (that rank) will rank the class after the Junior year. The earlier she gets her official 6th semester transcripts into admissions the earlier her file will be looked at. If she is a very high quality applicant it could mean the difference between an LOA and a later appointment.

That said - she still needs to go through the Congressional appointment process. If she gets a Nomination and ranks #1 she wins - even if her file is not looked at until Sept.

Complicated ? - yes but generally the earlier the better.

She will not have any setback in her application. Her LOA, if granted - and it is very rarely given and attending SLS will not have any real input in her gaining one, will be conditional on her Junior marks in anycase, so no problem. Early consideration in summer or early fall will be for only exceptional applicants and if she is one her previous grades will easily be enough information.
Each congressional district is different but most are aligned with West Point in terms of their timing and procedures, with most starting to consider applicants in Septmember if not later.
Make certain she applies for her NROTC and ROTC scholarship as well, opening the application now.
Make certain her application is complete as possible now for USNA and USMA.
be aware that Boys/Girls State is very important attribute for her file, the SLS will not really be of any major benefit - at least I am certain of that for USMA - and is offered for the applicant to understand the academy not for the academy to qualify the applicant.
