@FurBabyArchie We toured on Friday and DD fell in love. We still have a Spring Break tour of 4 colleges, but I think Rollins is the one to beat. We ate in the cafeteria and DD felt the students were like her. She liked that people were sitting together and saw no one sitting alone. She noticed people were dressed in a variety of styles and it seemed like a good mix of students. She wants to go to a school that’s collaborative and not so competitive like her current HS.
@sahmkc That’s awesome! I’ll tell you one of the things that really stood out to me yesterday. They served us lunch at in the cafeteria, and several faculty members were there as well to talk to the families. My daughter has expressed an interest in the Anthropology/Archaeology program, and we wanted to ask the professor some questions. After we got our food, there was no room at that professor’s table, but once some of the other people cleared out, we were able to join the table. The professor was very helpful, informative, and enthusiastic. My daughter sat in on a biology class after lunch, and then we decided to walk around the Anthropology department. The same professor was there in her office and saw us looking around, so she showed us the two labs, some of the archaeology collection on display, and introduced us to a current student. She then went back to her office and came out with several things she wanted to copy for my daughter–course maps for Anthropology majors and minors and some information about careers in Anthropology. I just felt like she really went out of her way to be helpful and informative. I take that as a good indicator that the professors are indeed engaged with the students and care about their success!
Looking at the students on campus, I noticed the same thing that your daughter did–there was much more variety among the students than some of the rumors depicting Rollins as a country club would have you believe. Hopefully that means there will be a social group for every type of kid, even the quiet ones!
After visiting her top two choices again this past weekend, my daughter has decided to attend Rollins! We are very excited for her and feel confident that Rollins is the best fit for her We deposited last night, then turned right around and spent an arm and a leg on Rollins apparel at the online bookstore. We now have a future Tar in the family!
Appreciate all of the comments on this thread.
Our son has been accepted and is visiting this weekend. He loved his visit to Denison last week, so we’re looking forward to seeing if Rollins is also a good fit.
@NashvilleAg is your son Eli? He was from Nashville. This weekend made Rollins such a great choice for everyone there.
@slaythedogma No, our son is Joseph. He was there for Priscilla Parker Scholarship event. Will have to ask him if he met anyone else from Nashville. He had a great visit. Really liked all of the other visiting kids as well as the students he stayed with on campus.
@NashvilleAg oh we were there for the Alfond Scholarship weekend! Honestly such a great school.
My daughter will attend as well. And not a partier at all!!!
@nancymarie I’ll send you a message with my daughter’s Instagram name. Maybe they can connect up before school starts.
Ugh! I’ve sent messages before, but for some reason I can’t figure out how to do it again. My daughter is baileya_18.
Also concerned about the “party” scene at Rollins. It’s currently my D’s favorite of the 3 campuses we’ve visited. But read a comment published on a very large, very well known college reviews website that talked about how Rollins was known for its drug scene and that coke was huge. That makes me sad because she loved everything about the campus. It will definitely weigh negatively on our decision if it remains in the running for her final choice.
@packattack1018 both my oldest S and D went to Rollins and believe me I too read about the drug scene etc. and was very concerned. One thing I learned from my kids is that while it is there you are not tripping over it. Both of those two kids and my other two kids who went to different schools have said the same thing. It is there for those who are looking for a drug scene but otherwise its not something you have to deal with if you are not.
So essentially I was worried but not any more worried than my kids at the other colleges. Of course it’s not something I was happy about but college kids will find that kind of scene at any college. I think the image of Rollins as having a huge coke scene is dated from when it was primarily seen as a party school for a lot of NE boarding school elites. ( I basically saw the same write up in one of those college reviews websites from about 10 years ago.) So perhaps it was more a problem in the past but my D and S said it was not a rampant problem.
Rollins is a fabulous college and I highly recommend it. I believe it has evolved from the days of being a party school which again I find silly because all colleges are party schools in many ways. They have given a lot of scholarships to attract students and I know that there had been fraternitys and sororities that had some suspensions in the past for violating alcohol and other policies. So the school does try to do what they can. Ultimately I had a long talk with all my kids before college (though I had been having similar conversations for years prior) about the consequences of getting involved in that kind of scene.
So if Rollins is your D’s choice I would discuss all this with her but realize that this discussion will need to occur at any college.
PM if you have any followup concerns or questions. If I was returning to college I would love to go to Rollins. I was always very happy to be on campus. I like my other two kids colleges but Rollins holds a sweet spot in my heart.
Never saw that while I was there. And FYI, you’ll find some drugs on every campus. I wouldn’t pay attention to someone’s negative hearsay.
