Did anyone else in the Rice Class of 2015 receive this message ....

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide you with information regarding your roommate at this time. As soon as that information is available, we will notify you. We know that you are looking forward to connecting with your roommate prior to arriving on campus and will provide you with that information as soon as are able to do so. Should you have additional questions or concerns, please e-mail oweek@rice.edu. We appreciate your patience and are looking forward to you meeting you in August.

Is it possible that it's just my residential college? I was assigned to Hanszen.

love4medicine - The yield of Rice has jumped significantly this year. Rice admitted x% of students assuming y% of x% admitted will accept. This year, y+12% accepted the offer leaving Rice with a freshman class of almost 1100 as opposed to the expected 950 or so.

When room draw is conducted at the end of the year, a certain number of beds are set aside for freshmen. This number will not be enough this year. I believe that Rice is trying to move people around/offer single rooms in the graduate apartments etc. to find on campus space. Again, this is speculation on my part, although Rice does have more people joining than expected.

You will find out as soon as they have it ready.

Do we have any source that will confirm this? I’ve looked, but the only statement I’ve found was a post by a student/parent? on this forum. It may be true, but you may be upsetting a bunch of freshmen if it’s not…

@OP, I’m advising at Hanszen, we definitely sent out roommate info through the mail. Did you at least get your o-week group info?

@MSmom&dad, I don’t have a source I can link to but I got that information in an e-mail through my college coordinator. Martel requested that upperclassmen move off-campus and shift rooms around to make room for freshmen, and this is likely a work-in progress and a probable explanation for the OP’s delay (ex. I JUST got word that a suitemate is leaving and we’re getting a transfer in her place)

MSmom&dad - I have heard this from sources inside the university. Nothing in writing either. I can only hope that what I heard is accurate and that I am not responsible for spreading rumors.

Yes. You can loft your bed, and put a desk underneath. It depends on the size of the futon, if you are ok with a cramped space and what your roomie does.

I had 2 desks, 1 dresser, 1 wardrobe, a bed, 2 shelves and a futon in my room, for reference.

I received my o-week book and emergency and travel waiver forms, but no roommate assignment. The above statement was given in an email.

I’m from out of state and have absolutely no desire to live off campus the first year, especially not knowing the area. Likewise, I love that I’ve been assigned to Hanszen and don’t want to switch to another residential college at this point.

Hopefully there are others who have received this message and it’s just an organization matter. But now, I’m worried :(

I very, very seriously doubt we’ll be pushing freshmen off-campus - and you certainly WON’T be forced to switch to another residential college. In the meantime though I’d suggest getting in touch with your advisors, just so you have someone with only 8 freshmen to worry about who can keep you updated.

love4medicine, I’m a Hanszen advisor, and first of all I’d like to welcome you to the best college at Rice! Also, I can promise you that ALL freshmen are guaranteed on campus housing for the first year, so don’t worry about that. The only reason you probably got the email is that, even though Hanszen has sorted out the rooming situation a lot better than any other college, because we planned for this, there were some logistical issues that were being sorted out by moving around some upperclassmen. That’s probably why you got the email, but I am almost certain that your roommate situation has already been sorted out or is being sorted out right now. Plan for coming as if you have a roommate, and if you have any more questions email your advisors! They are great resources and would love to help you and will be emailing you soon! So relax, take a deep breath and get pumped for O-Week!

I still haven’t gotten my roommate assignment …

I called today and they said that, though my roommate has been selected, they can’t reveal the information to me as of yet.

There’s a big possibility that I won’t know my roommate until the day I move in.

Bummer, I can’t figure out microwave/fridge/room issues until after getting to TX. I’m from out-of-state and I’m worried about working this stuff out after starting o-week.
