I'm wondering how people are approaching the short application essay that's a letter to your freshman roommate:
1) as another chance to say something moderately serious about your personality/social style/other but using a more casual tone with (horror) contractions?;
2) truly what you would write to your future roommate, kind of facebook-esque with incomplete sentences, rambles, slang, jokes, pet peaves etc.?; or
3) other?

I'm doing mine I think #1 style

I think it doesn't really matter but I don't think they want you to do #2...you should have complete sentences and stuff

I am just struggling with the opening phrase, really don't wanna use "Dear Roommate" or some version of it..

Yeah, I'm thinking about this too.
Maybe I'll just skip the "Dear ..." part.

.. as for personal experience though..
is it like a big event that has happened to you? or can it be a very casual everyday kind of thing?
I don't know how to approach this question... or the intellectually stimulating topic one either for that matter.

Moderately serious, yes, but mine did have an average amount of slang. I also had fragments at places where the stuff would otherwise sound too forced.

I even said *****.

I'm definitely thinking that part over, though.

Also, mine was an extremely normal everyday event: celebrating the last bit of standardized testing for the next for years. Not the best of choices, I'll admit >:O

Hey, what happened to my s-word? sugar honey ice tea LOL

I was talking to admission officers at MIT, and they said DO NOT EVER CURSE in the essay.
