Anyone doing any branch of ROTC while attending Stony brook?

How's the schedule / experience?

I did not participate in ROTC. However, I have a few friends who did.

Hofstra and Stony Brook share an ROTC program. I believe their classes/sessions are held a few nights a week at Hofstra. I’ve also seen the SB detachment doing PT on the SB main campus.

So, every morning when there’s PT along with its additional classes, I have to go to Hofstra every time? That’s not too close…

And how rigorious would it be to major in Bio as well as to participate in ROTC? Eh…

You will have to ask someone who is in the program. Give a call to the contact number.

However, as many science classes are held in the morning, your ROTC schedule may or may not interfere.

I am actually in the ROTC program at SBU hosted by Hofstra. I would be glad to give you a few details from my experience.

Biology is difficult no matter what you do, but every cadre member will immediately tell you that School Comes First - this means that if you have a class conflict, they are VERY flexible about working around it.

You would only have to go to Hofstra a few times over the semester - once to sign up and/or get your gear, for the welcome back/awards ceremonies, for CWST (water training) and once for the FTX (we have one every semester, over a weekend). Of course, there are other cadets with vehicles, so we normally work out a ride plan amongst ourselves and you’d get a ride.

What happens at SBU during the week is PT (MWF) from 0630-0730, which includes some scheduled road marches around campus. Then, Fridays the cadre commute out to SBU to teach our classes, so we don’t all have to go to Hofstra. Classes are from 1000-1200 and labs are usually from around 1300-1530, or so. You could even ask to go to a couple classes and labs just to see what they are like before you decide anything.

It’s actually more convenient than it sounds, because the cadre want to be as helpful as possible, and they are.

If you want more information about the Army ROTC from someone at SBU, I know you can call the Student Affairs office (631) 632-6700 and ask about it. If you’d like to talk to someone at Hofstra, CPT Massidas is your best option. His office number is (516) 463-7682.
