Routers...

Ok, so I've decided to buy a router as opposed to borrowing one from the school, and to share the connection with my roomies. Problem is, I have no idea what kinds of routers work. I was looking at a netgear, but it says it should have its ethernet plugged into a modem. Does anyone here have experience with what router I should get? Does anyone know a good brand?

Hold on. 10 char amazoning for you

standard router is here

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-WGR614-Cable-Wireless-Router/dp/B00008SCFL/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-0907314-5375223?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1190268375&sr=8-1%5B/url%5D">http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-WGR614-Cable-Wireless-Router/dp/B00008SCFL/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-0907314-5375223?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1190268375&sr=8-1</a></p>

you connect ethernet from wall to the router, then it acts as the access point through wireless or hard-line ethernets.

This is the basic consumer router with enough ooommph for your daily needs. If you need help setting up pop me a message.

keep in mind you will be responsible for whatever data goes through that router.

So what VTEC means is - password protect it, I also used IP assigned address and only allowed approved machines on.

and make sure your roommates dont do some mass pirating. :p

@Deuces, lol that's the one I was about to buy today. I was just really worried whether or not it would work for me, since the sales rep told me it had to be hooked to a modem and what not. I guess I'll go for that one as long as it works, and yeah, I'm going to password protect it so only my roomies (not even my suitemates) can use it.

you can just plug the ethernet from the dorm wall into the "modem" jack. he probably said modem because consumers buy it for their homes where they would either have cable or DSL, in which case you would plug the cable/DSL modem into the WAN (wide area network) port of the router.
