RPI Arch vs having a full college experience

DD is impressed with RPI arch program, and her mom likes RPI as a comfortable fit for a nerdy, quirky, somewhat shy kid.

DD is concerned that in RPI arch there would be no time to do extra currics. She has attended a very intense sci-math-tech magnet, and has had far less time for extra currics than she would have liked. Her other choice, Lehigh (four year BA in arch instead of BArch) would allow more time she thinks.

Her mom thinks having attended the very intense magnet means things might not be as hard for other as other kids, but DD and I are skeptical that hard work in HS really says anything about studio arch, which is different from typical courses.

I think she’d be in heaven surrounded by like-minded students, finally getting to do what she’s been wanting to do for years, so she won’t have any regrets. If she’s good at time management, she’ll be fine. Did she meet any students in architecture and get to ask them questions? If not, the school will probably be willing to put her in touch with a few.

She has ADHD-Inattentive. That means time management is a constant struggle. Her mom thinks that would be less of a problem at RPI than at BA program, cause she would hyper focus on her studio assignments.

She did speak to some students, who gave her the impression you could do maybe one light extra curricular. Which is less than she wants to do. Admins say they are friendly to student athletes, etc - DD thinks the admins underestimate the time management problem. (She’s not an athlete, but wants to do a capella, theater, activism, etc)

Hey,

I am a current Arch student at rpi. I am a second year and am involved in many extra curriculars. I have been on the varsity swim team for two years. There are about 5-10 people in my year that balance arch with a varsity sport, which is probably the most time consuming extra curricular. I know at least 5 people in my year that are in concert choir. Also, I am very involved in AIAS, the architecture club that is outside of classes. Also, I have been involved in volleyball club and a design club. There are also many people that join frats and sororities. Plus party a lot on weekend. So there is absolutely a way to have a life outside of studio at RPI. When you hear stories about people spending a full week on work, thats only the extreme. There are also some people who barely come in and work and everything in between.

Hi… Brooklynborndad is my dad, I’m the one he was talking about…

Would you say that it’s easy and feasible to do extra-currics, or only something you can do, but it’s stressful and you don’t have much time to sleep?

And what about other courses – how many extra slots do you have to take non-architecture courses?
