Rsi 2012

They said that everyone should have thier emails by Friday. Last year they didn’t send out all of the emails on the same day, presumably because there were unable to send out thousands of emails an one time. I suspect that if they keep thier promise that all the emails are to be sent out by Friday, they will have to send some out on Thrursday as well.

We’ll all know in less than 24 hours. Sigh. I want to say either way I’ll be happy, but I’d be lying to myself.

Well when my mom called Maite, my mom said that she sounded angry and said that they have “until Friday to finalize decisions.”

I’m taking this to mean all notifications are out on Friday. And I also presume that they indeed will be able to send all 2000 or so emails on one day, as crazy as that sounds.

Do any of you think that there is a chance for me to make it in if I haven’t done any significant research or won any major awards, but have been very active in starting science programs at school, have great letters of recommendation, lots of achievements in extracurriculars, and a set of essays that focused on my past experiences, those I planned (robotics competition), and then on how I could explore that further (with the facilities at RSI of course)? Thanks, I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t completely wasting my time checking this every 20 minutes.

There’s a chance for everybody…it’s so damn hard to get in though

@GPRacing, that’s a little abstract, but I think that I can say for sure that your chances are at least the 3% that everyone else gets. Besides, even if you don’t get in you didn’t waste your time applying (though you are wasting your time refreshing this thread every 20 minutes, and I am a hypocrite for saying so). You now have essays that can be used for future applications and the experience of having written a set of application essays which will give you an advantage in college applications.

Amen, iambenk

Hey guys I didn’t know how serious everyone was about this (I have one friend applying, and he basically dared me to do it). I apologize if I got anyone super excited or nervous. Best of luck to all of you; to whomever found my chance thread: a little more research would have shown that I started the Vanderbilt PAVE 2012 thread…I wouldn’t have had a shot at RSI.

tbh, I would stop checking and just wait til tomorrow. I doubt it’s coming tonight. just get some rest or go out and have fun. I mean, I REALLY want to get in, but I’m not letting it absorb me. just relax

you guys wanna play an online game or something?

League of Legends / Starcraft tym

Diplomacy? Any fans on this thread?

I love the board game Diplomacy (though it’s such an old game I assume you’re referring to something else)

No I mean the board game, zorn! There are a couple of online sites (one which I greatly prefer to the other, mind you) that allow you to play over the internet for free. While it eliminates the face-to-face persuasive nature of the game, there is a messaging feature and a “shoutbox.” It is very cool. My personal preference is playdiplomacy.com

aw, but the face-to-face events were my favorite. it let me use charisma and guile to convince people to do things they normally wouldn’t. also we had these laminated copies of the board and erasable markers that we could use to draw up strategies for war. i feel like the online version would take a lot of that away.
though I guess the game not lasting 3-6 hours would be a nice perk lol

the online version can last weeks lol…it isn’t constant though, which is both a plus and a minus. Because this is international (hell, the fee for premium membership is in euros) and people are in different time zones, it’s a messaging system which may literally take hours to get a response to. This is why a game with 12 hour turns is considered fast! However, you don’t have to take a large chunk of any one day to play, which is nice.

I know I am wasting time checking, but honestly, do any of us pay attention in school?

Sorry, I thought hitting reply would automatically put the @RSIuser.

@ the rest of you, is league of legends any good? My friends always talk about it, but it sounds dull (to me).

Personally, I question videogames in general. Why play videogames when you can read research articles, practice for math competitions, etc? <–good little researcher. Plus I have no time because I get 4 hours of sleep a night :D

Also, @GPRacing : I certainly do. At my school, even for the best and brightest, some of the classes are challenging enough to warrant paying attention and studying, but there are also classes that are extremely interesting. I learned tons of stuff in my Organic Chemistry class this fall, for example. I learned about all sorts of different instrumentation, lots about some more advanced reaction mechanisms, and now I’m using both of those in my research on polymers. Ironically enough, I’m taking Polymer Chemistry now, and even though I did my research on polymers, I’m finding that I’m still learning stuff. Basically, my point is to try to learn as much as you can. For me, I’m lucky enough to have classes that challenge me, engage me, and actually teach me new things that I can use in research, but I know that isn’t the case for a lot of people. In those slow classes, the ones that you honestly do know everything, then yeah, taking that time to do something productive is useful. For example, in my Physics B class last year, I studied for Physics Olympiad and math competitions, which has been very useful to me this year.

@chemMIT: does your school have a polymer chemistry class? Mine has an organic class but nothing higher :/
