Which college is best for Pre-med/Biology
I am a transfer from PA. I will paying full tuition primarily for most of these schools. I have been admitted to Rutgers, Kean, Penn State, West Chester, Pittsburgh, and Arcadia. I need some advice deciding which school would be best to ideal considering its educational relevance for biology major and medical school future. I finished my pre-med reqs and plan to take other science courses. Please comment on course professors, the grading system, the pre-med office, any injustice within administration...? Any courses you recommend or worth?

Please share the pros and the cons.

What matters to me is the quality of education, chances of success...

Thanks! Please either PM me or respond!

Either Penn or Rutgers. Both are good for pre-med.

I don’t feel equipped to give you a complete answer as I am not familiar with all of these schools. Rutgers and Penn State are popular choices in my area of NJ. Lots of great students go to these two colleges and do well.

I took Biology and chemistry at a community college before transferring into the pharmacy school at Rutgers (I graduated many years ago). I found the science courses taught at Rutgers to be…quite challenging.

Why are you transferring now? Are you at a comm college currently? Why not get your 2 year degree (and take some more science courses) before transferring to a 4 year college?

Just another point of view: I’m looking at it in terms of keeping your GPA high (in order to get into medical school) and making it more financially sustainable (my husband is an MD and it’s a long, expensive road). There are many paths that can lead you to your ultimate destination.

Hi RuAlum.

I am actually exactly doing what you said. I have completed 4 semesters at brookdale community college and only have 1 semester left (fall 2011) to take 2 more classes(physics II and Calculus II) in order to get an associate degree and then I will be applying for spring 2011 to rutgers. I have about 65 (56 transferable) credits and have completed all of medical school prerequisites with the exception of physics II (which I will take in fall 2011). Since your husband went to medical school, do you know if med schools truly look down on prerequisites taken in community college? I have a 4.0 GPA.
I am looking to take some upper level science courses such as microbiology, genetics, physiology, biochemistry and get a bachelor’s degree before applying to medical school.
I am hoping to get some money from rutgers so that I won’t have any undergraduate debt.

bottlecap- sorry, but I’m not sure because my husband went to a 4 year college so he didn’t have that issue.

I can’t imagine that a 4.0 from a cc would be looked at unfavorably during times like these, when many people are trying to make their educational dollars go further by attending cc’s for a year or two. Some medical schools may want to see certain things on your transcript, so if you have a specific place in mind, you should be investigating that issue right now by asking their admissions department what is required or recommended.
